As for Marvin's sudden change in his testimony, although he was already in prison, a large portion of the illegal assets was still nowhere to be found. They were still unable to discover where the missing funds had been transferred to.
However, via his stealthy investigations, Cayden had managed to discover that Marvin was keeping a mistress and an illegitimate child.
Before the crime took place, Marvin had secretly brought the mother and child to Sumanthova. He had also transferred a large number of assets and listed them under his illegitimate child's name.
Cayden used them to threaten him. If Marvin refused to comply, not only would he lose his assets, but he would also put the mother and son in danger.
Intimidated and despite harboring a deep hatred in his heart, Marvin chose to give in to Cayden's demands in the end.
Cayden was exceedingly cautious and dared not make a single mistake as the pieces fell into place.
This was because he would be unable to extricate himself if there happened to be a loophole in any of the links.
Avery admired Cayden's overly calculative mind as she listened to his short and concise explanation.
Ten years ago, he had already been so sophisticated and shrewd as he schemed against the adults. Compared to him, she had merely been a cowardly girl with low self-esteem. She could not compare to him at all.
Unable to help herself, Avery said, “Ten years ago, I only knew how to bury myself in my studies. I was also fairly clueless and dared not interact with others much. You were already learning the ropes in business with the others by then. You went home to study business when you vanished from the town's high school all of a sudden. It's no wonder... Did you know? I went to the places where you'd hang out every day after you left. The sports field where you use to play basketball, the cafeteria, and your classroom. I looked forward to seeing you appear every time I went to those places. However, I was alone from the beginning until the end. I thought we'd never meet again in this lifetime, but fate was kind to us in the end. We managed to meet and fall in love again.”
“Love will find a way,” Cayden murmured as he hugged Avery tightly and stroked her soft skin.
Back then, Cayden's grandfather had urged him to return home and take over Moore Group. Cayden had left in such a rush that he did not have the chance to bid Avery farewell.
He had assumed that his feelings for Avery were an unrequited crush, but she had unexpectedly returned his feelings. He was truly a very lucky person.
“The doctor told me that my leg will recover in about a week. I'll be going back to work then.” Avery grinned. After recuperating for almost three months, she was utterly bored with reading nothing but books every day and she had fallen behind in her work. If she continued to remain in that state, she felt she would be left behind by society.
“Okay.” Cayden looked at her, amused. “You really can't bear to take it easy, can you? Most women would be thrilled at being pampered by their men and enjoy the idle life. Instead, you constantly think about going back to work and can't forget it even when you're supposed to be recovering at home.”
In addition to handling work from the company, Cayden was aware that Avery had taken additional work on the side while she was recuperating. She would sit in front of the computer daily and be so immersed in her art that she would occasionally forget to sleep and eat. It left him speechless that she was far busier than a CEO like him.
Half-jokingly, Avery replied, “I enjoy a busy life. Work makes me feel fulfilled and I feel uneasy when I can't work. I'm probably not suited for an idle—ah!”
Halfway through her sentence, she suddenly screamed. With his heart in his throat, Cayden asked, “What's wrong?”
“Our baby just moved.” Avery grabbed Cayden's hand and placed it on top of her stomach.
She was five months into her pregnancy. As she was pregnant with twins, her stomach was obviously showing. However, this was the first time she had experienced fetal movement.
Cayden touched Avery's abdomen with his calloused hand and felt a faint movement.
Although the sensation was faint like the flutter of a butterfly's wings, he still felt a silent wonderment.
