Upon hearing that voice, Avery's heart felt as if it was being ruthlessly gripped by an invisible hand, causing her entire body to tremble in agony.
Tears uncontrollably fell from her eyes, “Cay, Cayden... Is that you? Is it really you?”
The woman's suppressed sob was incredibly soft, like a wisp of smoke or a floating thread which traveled through the phone, drifting into Cayden's ear.
It was as if he could see Avery's tear-streaked face as she cried.
Cayden felt a pang of heartache, but his rationality prevailed at the moment. “Don't cry... It's me, I'm still alive. Listen, I'm in a dangerous situation and I can't contact you too often for now; otherwise, it would put you and our kids in danger. I can't explain too much to you right now, but once I get home, I will tell you all about what I've been through these past two years...”
She was out there while he remained in the shadows.
She was like a flower blooming under the bright sunshine. He yearned to pluck it, yet he couldn't expose himself to the sunlight. Thus, he was filled with regret and could only sigh.
Avery really wanted to hold back her tears, but they were out of control, falling like pearls off a broken string. “Okay, the boy and I will wait for you to come home... Cayden, do you know? Our third treasure has been born. He's a boy and looks a lot like you. He is exceptionally clever and quick-witted. His nickname is Cal. Zach and Rory are also very well-behaved, and they don't give me any trouble at all. The old man fell seriously ill after you disappeared, but he's still quite strong and healthy. Trident Group is operating normally now, I've kept your company safe for you...”
As she and Cayden were husband and wife, she naturally knew what matters most to Cayden having loved each other for so long.
So, Avery spilled everything out to him without waiting for him to ask.
“Thank you, Honey.” Cayden's magnetic and affectionate voice reached Avery's ears. “Trust me, I will be back by your side very soon.”
Avery suppressed her excitement, lowering her voice to a whisper. But the slight tremble at the corner of her lips betrayed her emotions. “Cayden, where are you now? I've brought Cal to Mocset to find you. We're staying at Taron's place. Are you still in Mocset?”
At the other end, Cayden's face suddenly changed dramatically. “You took Cal to Mocset? Nonsense!”
“Why can't I come to Mocset? This is where you disappeared. I thought I could surely find some clues about you here, so I just...” Avery was at a loss.
She came to Mocset, yet Cayden was so irate. She felt deeply wronged right then and there.
Cayden spoke quickly and urgently, “Avery, listen to me. My disappearance is related to a Remdikian assassin organization called 'Dark River'. This organization is ruthless and inhumane. For the past two years, I've been under their control. A few days ago, I managed to escape from them, but they've been hunting me ever since. If they find out that you've taken our child into their territory, both you and Cal will be in great danger...”
Avery shook her head in disbelief. “How could this be?”
But after thinking that Cayden was still in danger, the tears she had barely managed to stop, burst out again. “What on earth is going on? If what you're saying is true, then isn't your situation even more dangerous? How can I save you?”
Cayden could imagine Avery's current state of panic and vulnerability.
He slowed down his speech, soothing her gently, “Fool, don't worry about me. I'm fine. You need to take care of yourself and Cal. Now that you're in Remdik, the people from the underworld may have already set their sights on you. Remember every word I say: Taron has considerable influence in Remdik. Although I've only met him once, he's a man of honor and we have a good relationship. You can seek his protection.”
