Just as Felicity stepped into the bathroom, the pregnancy test box in her hand hadn't even been opened yet when her phone suddenly erupted into a series of rings.
Startled, her hand twitched, and the box tumbled down to the floor!
She glanced at the caller ID—
It was the very person who could be at the root of it all!
Bending down, Felicity picked up the box and pressed the answer button with a sigh, "What's up?"
"Hey, I found this cool diner downtown, wanna check it out?" Miles was clueless about the turmoil on her end; he was just eager to spend more time with her, to feel a bit more present in her life.
"Not interested! Bye!" she snapped.
Her current state of agitation was sky-high; she was in no mood for food or outings.
After hanging up, Felicity simply turned off her phone and then proceeded to unpack the pregnancy test.
"Okay... now I wait five minutes..."
Those five minutes, standing alone in front of the bathroom sink, felt excruciatingly long for her.
Each second felt like an eternity of agony.
Finally, the result appeared.
Her hands shook slightly as she held the instructions, "One line means not pregnant, two lines mean pregnant, and this line means... it's invalid."
She looked down.
The test showed one line.
One line meant not pregnant!
"No, no, I have to make sure, is this the invalid line..."
Felicity squatted there, scrutinizing it for what felt like ages, only to conclude that, as far as she could tell, she wasn't pregnant.
But then why hadn't her period come?
Lost in thought, she was startled by a knock at the door!
But seeing her so anxious, clearly, she was scared of him finding out. Pressing her further wouldn't be right.
So, pursing his lips slightly, he nodded, "Alright, let's go."
Throughout the meal, Felicity was noticeably distracted.
Whatever Langston offered, she ate without her usual vibrancy and chatter.
Noticing her change, he softly inquired, "Felicity, if there's something work-related bothering you, feel free to talk to me."
After all, Felicity didn’t seem to be under any life or financial pressures, so work was the only plausible source of her stress.
"My job's fine, no issues there."
"If there's something wrong health-wise, you can tell me that too."
"Nothing's wrong."
Felicity lifted her head and forced a chuckle, "Actually, there is something! I need to take half a day off tomorrow morning."
