"What are you doing?!"
"Relax, it'll be okay."
Miles gently stroked her hair before turning to leave the bedroom.
Shortly after, he returned, this time without his suit jacket. The top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, revealing a hint of his muscular chest beneath.
"The doctor said if the pain's too much, you can take some painkillers. They're not great for you, but it's better than suffering through it."
"Oh..."
"I've sent someone to get them; they'll be here soon." After saying this, Miles climbed into bed next to her, lying on his side!
Felicity gasped, "You, you!"
He didn't reply, instead placing his palm on her abdomen and gently massaging through the fabric of her clothes.
It was a simple, caring gesture, devoid of any desire or flirtation.
It reminded her of the times when she was a little girl and had bumped her head, and Langston would rub it better.
"Maybe this will help for a bit. You said you wanted to sleep, right? So close your eyes and rest. I'll wake you when the medication arrives."
Felicity didn't reply, but obediently closed her eyes.
Sleep, however, was the last thing on her mind.
"Langston."
"Hmm?"
"Do you remember when I was twelve, and our families spent Thanksgiving together?"
Miles hummed in acknowledgment, "Yeah, your golden birthday."
Back then, Felicity was much chubbier than she is now.
Plump and fair, with cheeks puffed out like little dumplings and big round eyes, she was adorably cute.
"No," Miles spoke firmly, shutting down the conversation, "You said a month, so we'll wait a month."
"…My answer will be the same whenever."
"How can it be the same?" he countered, brows furrowed. "There's a world of difference between an immediate sentence and a reprieve."
As long as there was a delay, there was still hope.
Felicity bit her lip hard, looking away.
His voice, deep yet soft, filled her ears.
"I still want to marry you, Felicity. I want to be your husband, the father of your children. I dream of a day when I can hold your hand in mine and our baby in the other. That's what I want."
"..."
"It's my fault, whatever punishment you think I deserve, I'll accept. But please, don't sentence me to death just yet. Give me another chance, I'll prove I'm the right partner for you."
