Karen, who was at work, was taken aback by Dorothy's raspy voice when she called.
"What happened to you? Didn't my brother say your mom didn't find out?"
"It's not about my mom." Dorothy hesitated for a while on the other side of the phone, before finally speaking with difficulty, "Can I...can I stay at your place for a few days? I'll find a place as soon as I can. It’ll be for a week at most!"
Karen was taken aback, "You're not renting your place anymore?"
Dorothy hesitated a bit before saying, "Yeah, you could say that."
"Then just move in with me! Why bother staying temporarily?" she sighed, "I suggested this before, but you were adamant about not agreeing! How great would it be if we lived together? You could help me cook and clean and keep me company! That's settled then. Move in tonight!"
"Okay, we'll talk more when you get off work."
After hanging up, Karen sat at her desk, her eyes spinning, before quickly calling Kenneth.
"Just a heads up that Dorothy is moving into my place today. We might need a strong guy to help move her stuff!"
Kenneth chuckled on the other end, "You sly fox, now you're talking in circles."
"Tsk! What do I have to talk in circles for? I'm not the one pursuing her!"
"All right!" he laughed, "I'll come after work. Thanks for setting this up, okay?"
"That's more like it!" Karen snorted, "Don't underestimate Dorothy because she's struggling now. Given time, she's bound to make big strides in her career. By then, you'll have a beautiful and talented wife, and you'll be laughing up your sleeve!"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah."
"That's settled then! See you tonight."
Putting down the phone, Karen let out a long sigh.
According to the contract, if he proposed to terminate it first, he wouldn't pursue the medical expenses for her mother.
Dorothy thought that once she earned enough, she would have definitely repaid him to buy back her dignity.
At six in the evening, she took a taxi to Karen's place with her luggage.
That little minx, Karen, came bouncing down the stairs to greet her, followed by Kenneth.
"You've finally agreed to stay at my place! My dear Dorothy, do you know how happy I am?"
"I'm just staying temporarily. Once I find a suitable place, I'll move out." Dorothy still insisted on not owing anyone any favors.
She was afraid that if she stayed for too long and accepted too much of Karen's kindness, she wouldn't be able to return the favor!
