Chapter 583
Leopold crept back to his room at the crack of dawn, in case William woke up and found he had slept with Aurelia overnight.
By nine-thirty, Megan made her way home on her own, tired of waiting for Leopold to come and get her.
Lounging on the couch with an air of lethargy, Leopold sipped his coffee and muttered, "I'll get someone to take you back to Harmony Hill Mansion."
"No. I want to stay here with you,’ Megan protested. How could she go back alone? She wanted to keep an eye on him.
A look of impatience flickered across Leopold's face. "You're pregnant now. Quit the theatrics."
Megan caressed her slightly swollen belly tenderly. “The doctor said the baby and I are fine. I am your chosen wife, and God will look after me. Those who wish me harm won't end up well."
"Only by not committing evil can you truly accrue virtue for our child,’ Leopold said sternly.
With a huff, Megan retorted, "Don't think Aurelia’s all that saintly. My fall was her doing. She had that brat William lie to me, saying you were down by the rocks. That's why I went there."
Leopold let out a mocking laugh. “You're judging a noble heart by your petty standards. Aurelia doesn't have time for such nonsense. You were suspicious I wasn't in my room and ran out looking for me."
His words were sharp, hitting home, and Megan turned a shade paler for having been seen through. “Honey, I've always been worried about losing you to someone else. We're going to have a baby. I can't be without you."
A dark chill flashed in Leopold's eyes as he replied, “Your status will never be secure unless the AK Group is out of the picture. I can't let an enemy's spy become the matriarch of the Stirling family. I demand absolute loyalty, not deceit and underhanded tricks. If you haven't considered severing ties with the AK Group, you'll never be more than what you are in my eyes."
His every word carried a stark warning, sending a shiver down Megan's spine.
