Fungi outlive bacteria, they can hibernate as spores, so they can survive for ages. In the Antarctic ice sheets, there could be fungi from hundreds of millions of years ago. They're just dormant, but the moment conditions are right, they can spring to life and multiply. Fungi in the human body do the same."
"But bacteria are different. They don't have spore forms, and they don't hibernate. In the wild, bacteria's survival skills are pretty weak. For example, high heat can kill most bacteria. So Medusa can be defeated, even though current antibiotics can't kill it, we can use phage therapy."
Hearing this, Aurelia let out a small sigh of relief, "What did Leopold ask you about?"
Skyler said, "Leo asked me how to cultivate phages. I told him we needed to track down a unique hedgehog from the Amazon, and it's Medusa's host. Medusa is the host for the phages. Find this hedgehog, and we get both Medusa and the phages that kill it."
Aurelia's heart skipped a beat, "Can't these phages be found in Elysium?"
"A phage only targets one kind of bacteria as its host," Skyler explained, "Medusa is unique to the superbug from the Amazon rainforest, and the phages that live on it are also only found there."
"Is phage therapy the only treatment?"
"Yeah, as of now. It's the only one unless we can develop a super antibiotic that kills it."
Aurelia's heart twisted in fear. The hospital must have been treating her with phages, not super antibiotics, or else Leopold wouldn't be asking about how to grow phages. But weren't the phages used on her developed by the biological institute?
A massive cloud of doubt cast a shadow over her mind, sprawling out like an unwelcome specter.
Skyler looked puzzled at her, "Angel, why are you and Leopold so fixated on Medusa?"
"It's about me...my friend. She was poisoned by Megan, and that poison is Medusa," Aurelia whispered.
"How is she doing now?" Skyler inquired.
