Evelyn thought she was deliberately stalling, "Once he's discharged, he's going to file for divorce."
Megan clenched her jaw, "We're never getting a divorce."
Evelyn snorted with a smirk, "Good luck with that. Once the Stirlings take it to court, no judge will dare side with you."
Megan twitched her mouth as if stung by a wasp. The words hit her where it hurt.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to stay calm, trusting that her boss would find a way to save her marriage, to stop Leopold from divorcing her.
"Are you taking pleasure in my misfortune? You're just jealous I married Leopold and you'd love to see me divorced. You're truly vicious."
Evelyn hummed lowly, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you. The gossip about you is everywhere. They say you stooped to any level to have a child by another man, trying to pass it off as Leopold’s. Leopold found out and now he wants a divorce. In your rage, you poisoned him. When Leopold gets out, mark my words, it's over for you. The Stirlings won't let you off the hook, and the Alcotts will suffer too."
Megan's face flushed with anger, "That's complete nonsense, slander! My child is Leopold's, of course."
"Then why didn't you dare to give birth at the hospital chosen by the Stirlings? Why hide away?" Evelyn challenged.
"I was afraid Aurelia would interfere and take my child. She's always resented me, plotting against me and my baby. She must be behind these rumors, trying to smear my name."
Evelyn retorted, "Better get a paternity test done with the child soonest. Prove the lineage, and all these rumors will crumble to dust."
Megan glared at her, "I have my plans, no need for your concern. Just mind your own business."
Evelyn pouted, "I'm worried about the Alcotts getting dragged down with you to go bankrupt and be forced to flee the country."
Callie's complexion turned slightly pale. This was her greatest fear. Her daughter's actions were too erratic.
If the baby wasn't Leopold's, both she and the Alcotts were doomed.
