Megan and Jewel approached the grand facade of Stirling Mansion, its ivy-covered walls looming like sentinels of an ancient realm. Megan couldn’t care less about the where the child was. It wasn’t her child. What did his fate have to do with her anyway?
But Jewel had insisted, practically dragging her along to unearth the child’s whereabouts, so she had to bite the bullet and face the intimidating Stirling family.
Before long, the butler appeared, his posture rigid and formal.
“Lady Jessica is out for the weekend, and the Stirling Mansion is not receiving guests today,” he announced curtly.
Megan blinked in surprise. “Where did Jessica go?”
“She’s taken a short weekend getaway,” the butler replied lightly.
A silent exchange passed between Megan and Jewel. Jessica still had the mood for weekend trips? It seemed Leopold was on the mend. Perhaps he’d leave the hospital soon.
“I’m here to see my child. Leopold had someone fetch him yesterday,” said Megan.
“There have been no children brought to Stirling Mansion,” the butler stated indifferently.
Megan was incredulous. “That’s impossible. If my child wasn’t here, where else could he be?”
“I am but a butler. I do not inquire into the affairs of the master. If nothing else, I must ask you to leave,” the butler said, turning to depart, only to be stopped by Megan’s firm grip. “What about Aurelia? Is she here?”
“Mrs. Stirling is also out,” he replied.
The title of “Mrs. Stirling” set Megan ablaze with anger, her temper flaring up instantly.
“Mrs. Stirling? She divorced Leopold ages ago. She’s no longer Mrs. Stirling! I am Leopold’s wife, your respectable Mrs. Stirling!”
The butler replied coolly, “The mother of the young master, Kane, is always Mrs. Stirling, which is the rules of the Stirling family.”
The injustice of it was too much for Megan. If it weren’t for Kane, that wretched brat, Aurelia would have been booted from the Stirling family long ago.
And the damned kid Kane seemed to have a charmed life, surviving against all odds.
Meanwhile, her child had the misfortune of vanishing shortly after birth without even knowing if it was a boy or a girl.
She couldn’t help but think it was due to Kane’s cursed luck.
“I have given birth to a young master for the Stirling family, too. My child is legitimate. I am the real Mrs. Stirling.”
The butler was not interested in a battle of wits. “If nothing else, I must ask you to leave. Good day,” he said, not waiting for a response before returning to the house.
