Cordelia hurried downstairs to see her mom chilling on the couch. Janice was preparing dinner, which would be served soon.
Earlier, Shelley had sneakily asked Janice who that chick they saw last night was. Janice said it was some famous actress, Deanna. But now, Shelley was looking for Cordelia. Deanna was old news.
"Mom, what's up?" Cordelia asked Shelley, with one hand resting on Shelley's shoulder, and the two of them looked very close.
"Jamie, your brother’s boss, just texted me to wish me well. Such a sweet kid," Shelley replied to Jamie's message while speaking.
Shelley's smartphone was a new gift from Cordelia, and she was still getting the hang of it. Typing was a struggle.
In Cordelia's mind, she thought, "Why is everyone mentioning Jamie today?"
Just as she was about to change the topic, her mom asked, "Jamie's a good catch, isn't he? How old is he again? Got a girlfriend?"
"He just turned 30. Pretty sure he's single. Mom, can we not talk about him?" Cordelia tried to steer the conversation elsewhere.
"Why not?" Ronan descended from the stairs, his voice oozing charm.
Cordelia's face went a weird shade of red. So unlucky just after Christmas, perhaps it was going to be a tough year.
"I asked Della how old Jamie is because I wanted to introduce him to a girlfriend. He came to see me and even sent me messages; he's a really nice person," Shelley said with a smile, holding her phone.
"Well, really? Maybe we should ask him if he's got someone in mind?" Ronan quipped, enjoying Cordelia's discomfort.
"Yeah, Della, do you know what kind of girl Jamie's into?" Shelley turned to Cordelia.
"Mom, why are you so eager to get him a girlfriend? He's not even as that eager as you. Let's eat." Cordelia suggested, taking a seat at the table.
Cordelia casually glanced at the food on the table and said to Janice, "Merry Christmas, Janice. You've worked hard all year."
"Not at all. Cordelia, I overheard some chatter in the living room saying you turned 24 this year. You've gotta be more careful when doing things in the future." Janice cautioned Cordelia as she set the table. "Watch your back."
"She almost forgot her own age yesterday, not only can't remember her own age, but can't even recall Ronan's age. Is she really suitable to be someone else's wife?" Shelley looked at Cordelia and said.
Normally, it was just banter. But Ronan wasn't laughing. He remembered clearly. She mentioned earlier that the guy had just turned 30. She just didn't know his exact age.
