Cityscape Plaza.
Marian warmly welcomed Cordelia and Brooklyn. As expected, Cordelia wasn't wearing her pearl necklace today. Marian didn't ask about it. They chatted as they walked.
“See that guy over there? That's the CEO of Allure Artists, and next to him is his wife. She's a real powerhouse, a real estate tycoon, and a Cambridge PhD fellow. And over there is the head of TrueNorth Enterprises. She's even more impressive, a Harvard whiz, doesn't rely on any man, and is completely focused on her career. And there's the head of Radiance Productions. His wife doesn't work, but all his money goes straight to her. She's a doctor of economics, and there's no fooling her when it comes to money. Impressive, right?” Marian pointedly said to Cordelia.
Cordelia was beginning to understand why Marian had invited her today. Marian had one way of mocking Cordelia, which was belittling her bachelor's degree, as always.
Cordelia merely smiled as if unaffected.
“By the way, you know about Grant, right? His wife cheated on him and even tried to kill him, but she got off easy because she was pregnant.”
Cordelia knew about this, and she nodded.
“His wife barely finished high school. She was a real small-timer,” Marian said disdainfully.
“Looks like we're out of our depth here. We really shouldn't be at a gathering like this. We’re nothing compared to these people.” Brooklyn understood Marian's intent to mock her and Cordelia's education.
“What do you mean?” Marian feigned ignorance. “You two? What does this have to do with you?” She acted as if she'd said nothing offensive.
