"Okay," Maxwell responded.
His voice had barely faded away when he suddenly screamed and all of his muscles started twitching.
"Is your body rejecting the gene?" Rocky asked, mostly to himself. That was the first time that he had done genetic experiments on a human being. Although the new genes he had developed wouldn't have much impact on the main genetic sequences of a human and normally wouldn't endanger their lives, he was still worried that something else could go wrong.
Therefore, in order to stabilize the rejection that Maxwell's body was currently going through, Rocky touched him and transferred some of his spiritual power over.
Moments later, he realized that the spiritual power that he had poured into Maxwell's body was being absorbed too quickly.
Rocky bent over and looked closely at Maxwell's body. He discovered lots of big changes, especially in his meridians. He knew that an ordinary person's meridians were different from that of a spirit warrior. A spirit warrior's meridians were much wider and thicker and they connected with each other in a harmonious way.
Meanwhile, it looked like Maxwell's meridians were also widening. Before long, they were wider than a spirit warrior's!
"Is his body experiencing extreme mutation because of the new genes?" If that were the case, Rocky wasn't sure whether it was a good thing or a bad thing.
For the sake of safety, Rocky had to withdraw his spiritual power. Seconds later, it appeared that Maxwell's condition had slightly improved, but his body was still undergoing changes.
He had also fallen into a coma.
It took more than twenty hours for his physical changes to cease. Rocky stood guard beside him the whole time and checked his body, and the results he saw were even more surprising.
Rocky gasped. Judging from the width of Maxwell's meridians, he had reached at least the primary stage of the Spiritual Infant.
In other words, Maxwell hadn't needed to cultivate for a long time to broaden his meridians and hold more spiritual power. He would only need to adapt to his new body and strengthen his physical cultivation. There was a chance that in a few months, he could move straight to the primary stage of the Spiritual Infant.
"This is a blessing in disguise," Rocky murmured to himself. He had expected his genetic experiments to be successful, but he had no idea that they could reach such limits.
Not long after, Maxwell woke up.
"How long... have I slept?" he mumbled, thinking he had been asleep the entire time.
"It's been half a day. Are you feeling uncomfortable?" Rocky asked, stepping closer to him.
"No, I'm fine. In fact, my body feels super light..." As Maxwell spoke, he propped himself up with one hand, nearly causing his head to hit the ceiling.
His eyes were wide as he looked down at Rocky. After landing back on the ground, he looked at his hands and feet in a panic.
"The experimental genetic modification performed on your body was successful. Now, you have directly acquired the physique of a spirit warrior. That means you won't have to build a foundation like an ordinary spirit warrior in order to break through to the Spirit Realm. Your physique is already on par with a Spiritual Infant at the primary stage," Rocky explained.
"A Spiritual Infant at the primary stage? Really?" Maxwell knew plenty about the levels of the spirit warrior, so he was aware that the primary stage of a Spiritual Infant was a point in which no ordinary spirit warrior could get past.
"Why would I lie to you? Besides, this doesn't mean that you can just rest easy. You still have to cultivate hard. After all, you don't have a solid foundation yet. And you have a lot of things to do to reach the next level. But don't fret. I will give you some guidance," Rocky said with a smile.
"Recently, the defense line of the western region that is stationed by Commander Ling has been attacked by some spiritual beasts. Now the front line is in danger. These spiritual beasts have united and don't intend on backing down. We think that they have been manipulated by the spiritual race. Commander Ling's soldiers have tried relentlessly to solve this problem, but to no avail. So they came to the Tiger Whisker Pass to discuss it with me. Basil, you seem to have lots of experience in fighting spiritual beasts. Maybe you can help Commander Ling," Tucker explained, turning to face Rocky. Suddenly, all their eyes were on him.
"Okay. I will try my best to help you!" he responded.
"Thank you, Basil. Could you please come with me? We happened to catch one of the spiritual beasts two days ago. Maybe you can find some clues from it and figure out a solution for us," Commander Ling said, cupping his hands.
"Sure," Rocky replied, nodding.
"But wait. Who will lead the team if Basil leaves?" Kye asked.
"You will. You are the acting captain in my absence," Rocky answered, looking back at him.
"Well..." Kye felt a little embarrassed even though he was supposed to be the team leader.
"Perfect. Kye, you will temporarily act as captain while Basil is gone," Tucker ordered at once.
"Yes, sir." Kye took the order.
After that, Rocky and Commander Ling climbed onto a flying beast and flew to the front line of the western region.
The region was an important military base for the human army in the border war. If the front line were lost, it would directly threaten the safety of the Tiger Whisker Pass and other passes. Now Rocky understood why Tucker had been so willing to send him there to help.
