“But he’s not stupid. If you keep provoking him because of Samantha, then eventually, Finley will kick you off the mountain! So, Emily, listen to me–stop badmouthing Samantha. Otherwise, even I won’t be able to help you.”
Badmouthing Samantha? Emily didn’t think so. She was just speaking the truth. Samantha never wanted to go public with her relationship with Finley, nor did she want to give him any official status. So what was wrong with telling the truth? Sometimes, Emily wondered if she was truly her brother’s sister. If she really was, then why did Elias always take Samantha’s side instead of hers? D
As the thought crossed her mind, Emily’s mood darkened. “Elias, sometimes I really wonder -am I your sister, or is Samantha? Why do you care more about her than you do about me? And why are you always scolding me? I said what I did to Sam purely by accident. If I made her angry, I’ll apologize–what’s the big deal?”
Elias softened his tone. “It’s not the apology that matters, but the fact that what you said could easily be misunderstood.”
Emily bit her lip, frustration evident as she stood abruptly from the couch. “Well, I’ve never been good with words. What am I supposed to do? Or do you think I should apologize again for my slip of the tongue? If that’s what you want, I’ll go and kneel before her until she forgives me. Will that satisfy you?”
As she spoke, Emily’s emotions escalated, and she prepared to leave the house to apologize to Samantha. However, Elias quickly grabbed her arm. “Forget it! Samantha isn’t that petty.”
Moreover, after offending Samantha, confronting her would only make things worse. Elias figured it would be better to let Samantha cool down; perhaps the situation would be forgotten by the next day. And if Samantha was still upset the next day, he could always apologize on Emily’s behalf. After all, she was his sister, and no matter how wrong she was, he felt a responsibility to protect her. What else could he do?
Emily’s expression turned sarcastic. “So what you’re saying is, Sam isn’t petty, but I am. Is that it?”
Elias found himself at a loss for words. That wasn’t what he meant at all. He looked at Emily, unsure of how to explain himself. Before he could say anything, Emily spoke again, “I’m tired. I’m going to bed. You should get some rest, too.”
“But Emily, you haven’t eaten yet.”
Given her current state of mind, Emily had no appetite. The thought of food was unappealing. “I’m not hungry. I’m not eating.”

With that, Emily retreated to her room, leaving Elias behind to sigh in frustration. He couldn’t help but think that understanding a woman’s thoughts might be an impossible task.
The next morning, Samantha had just woken up and opened her door when she found Elias standing outside. The sight startled her, instantly dispelling any lingering sleepiness.
