Noah, despite the sharp sting of pain, shook his head resolutely, reassuring his grandfather that he was perfectly fine. He took a deep breath and continued eating, his gaze unwaveringly fixed on Samantha.
Just as Samantha was about to speak, Finley’s icy voice sliced through the evening air.
“If you keep staring, I’ll have to gouge out your eyes and feed them to the dogs.”
Noah, visibly unnerved, immediately complied. The threat of having his eyes fed to the dogs by Finley was more than enough to make him avert his gaze. After all, who would dare defy such a grim warning unless they were ready to part with their eyes?
After dinner.
As Samantha and Finley prepared to leave, Samantha guided Josiah to a quiet, secluded corner where they could converse privately. Noticing Samantha’s hesitation, Josiah, with a gentle voice, asked, “Sam, what’s troubling you? Is there something you need to tell Grandpa?”
Surveying their surroundings to ensure they were alone, Samantha replied, “Grandpa, first and foremost, I owe you a heartfelt apology. I am truly sorry, but I cannot marry Noah. Secondly, before I go home, I feel it is necessary to warn you to be wary of Amy.”
She continued, “The words you spoke to Amy at the dinner table today have deeply unsettled her. I fear that, because you’ve prevented her from marrying Noah, she might try to harm you.”
Josiah, fully aware of Amy’s nature, had his reservations. Although he regretted that Samantha could not marry his grandson, he respected her decision.
“Sam, do not fret about Grandpa. I will take care of myself. And there is no need for apologies. Marriage involves two people; it is not something one can force. If you do not have feelings for Noah, I cannot compel you to stay together. To do so would be to undermine your happiness.”
His voice softened with compassion. “I made a promise long ago to your grandfather that I would look after you. As long as you are happy, even if you do not marry my somewhat lackluster grandson, that is acceptable. Besides, I can see that Finley has deep feelings for you.”
“If he loves you, I am sure he will treat you well. So, Sam, you must find your happiness.”
“I will, Grandpa.
