Puzzled, Emily asked, “Why’s that?” 

Hazel explained, “If people start questioning you, you can show them the necklace and prove it’s not stolen. I’ll clarify that I found it and that there was no theft. It’s a win–win–you keep the necklace, and everyone stops doubting you. Please, just take it so I can put this behind us.” 

Emily thought for a moment, but Hazel’s explanation seemed reasonable. She subconsciously nodded and agreed, “Okay, that makes sense. Still, will accepting this really clear everything up with my classmates?” 

Hazel gave her a reassuring smile. “Absolutely. Once I explain everything and tell them I found the necklace, there won’t be any more misunderstandings. Trust me.”

It seemed like Hazel’s strategy had worked. With a reluctant grin, Emily took the diamond necklace. “Thanks, Hazel. Since you’re being so genuine, I’ll forgive you.”
