The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 64

Megan took a deep breath and forced out a smile, for she realized that more guests were looking in their direction. Even Shaun was coming their way.

The last thing she wanted was for everyone to see her as some petty, unrefined shrew.

As such, she drawled, "Nolan, I know you're doing all this to spite me and make me jealous. You're hoping I'd go back to you and love you again. You crave affirmation.

"Sorry to burst your bubble, but whatever you're doing now only makes you look like a buffoon to me. You're disgusting, and you're a joke.

"You put on that suit to make me remember our wedding day, and you named a cheap replica 'Audrey's Devotion' to make me believe you're wealthy. I admit that I thought too highly of you.

"Go on, then. Show us what other tricks you have up your sleeve. Did you come here with Audrey and flaunt your so-called relationship before me so I'd rise to the bait?

"Don't make me laugh. You're nothing but a pathetic clown, Nolan. This is my final warning to you. Get out of here before you get into trouble. The Weiss family might not come after you because their daughter is involved, but the Thompsons certainly aren't as forgiving.

"Also, don't forget that Chase works for Lincoln. Do you think Lincoln would spare you if he finds out how badly you roughed up Chase?"

Megan had only just wrapped up her threat when she spotted Shaun coming her way. She flashed him a warm smile and said, "Mr. Baxter, congratulations. I'm so glad Mr. Baxter Senior has recovered. I fully intend to enjoy the festivities thrown in his honor tonight."

Jeanne quickly straightened up and flipped her hair over her shoulder when she saw Shaun, hoping to catch his gaze.

At that moment, Shaun recalled Nolan wanting to lay low during the event and dared not reveal too much about him. He explained pleasantly, "Yes. We met by chance. It seems you and Mr. Greene are quite familiar with each other, Ms. Turner."

By chance?

Megan secretly heaved a sigh of relief before letting out a small laugh. "Yes, well, Nolan and I go way back. After all, Audrey and I used to be best friends."

Shaun's gaze darted to Audrey at the mention of this, and a gleam flashed in his eyes. Megan and Jeanne did not miss the look he gave Audrey. At once, they knew he liked her.

The realization irked Megan and Jeanne. They didn't think they were bad-looking, so why did Shaun have to be attracted to the one woman they did not like? It admittedly wounded their pride.
