Archie greeted the other guests at the main table, then grabbed the microphone and went onto the stage.
He beamed as he surveyed the audience. He was elated and felt like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders after Charles had been cured of his illness, and it showed.
"To start things off, I'd like to thank everyone here for taking the time to join us this evening to take part in our charity. On behalf of the Baxter family, I would like to donate ten million dollars to help the impoverished, sponsor students in need, and for other charitable purposes.
"Secondly, the Baxter family will be putting a few of our collectibles up for auction. All proceeds will go to charitable foundations. I promise not a single cent will be unaccounted for.
"You may monitor the cash outflow, and all donations will be made public. Thank you."
Having concluded his speech, Archie made to get off the stage. Just then, someone in the crowd asked, "Mr. Baxter, now that Mr. Baxter Senior is better, will we be permitted to visit him and congratulate him?"
The charity gala this evening was held in celebration of Charles' recovery, but Archie had made no mention of it.
Curiosity aside, some members of the audience wanted to know if Archie would now be open to discussing and agreeing to the joint ventures he had previously dismissed. After all, the man was in better spirits now that Charles had recovered.
Upon hearing this, Archie chuckled and replied, "Thank you all for your concern. Mr. Baxter Senior has indeed recovered, but he must recuperate in peace. While your visitation will be most appreciated, it simply isn't the time for it."
He walked off the stage after that. Thus, the charity gala began.
The guests in attendance this evening were ready to spend. It wasn't long before the items on stage were auctioned off one by one.
