The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 78

The longer Nolan took, the more people noticed he was uncomfortable. Whispers spread through the crowd, suggesting Nolan was pretending. They said he made high bids without actually having the money, just to cause trouble.

Audrey, forcing a smile, quickly said, "Nolan, I don't want the Verdant Serenity anymore. Let's just return it."

But returning the painting wasn't just about giving it back anymore. Everyone was watching. It would be really embarrassing if Nolan couldn't pay.

Returning it would make it clear that Nolan didn't have the money. It would seem like he had been bidding high just to make a scene, which would look like he was trying to cause trouble on purpose.

It would be a major embarrassment.

Seeing Audrey, Nolan gave a small, calm smile. "Don't worry. Even if I can't pay right now, the Verdant Serenity is still yours. No one can take it away."

Shaun, standing nearby, was barely hiding his contempt. Pretending to be rich was one thing, but acting so confidently while actually being broke was something else.

He was sure Nolan was relying on the Baxter family to cover his costs. If he weren't worried about upsetting Archie, Shaun would have already called Nolan out and mocked him.

With a forced smile, he said quietly to Nolan, "How about I just say you've already paid and it was my mistake?"
