The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 84

When Megan heard someone bid five hundred thousand dollars, she almost choked on her drink.

But before she could even react, things got even crazier. Megan and Jeanne just stared at each other, thinking either they were hearing things wrong, or everyone else had gone nuts.

"Mr. Odell, five hundred thousand dollars? No way. I'm offering two million dollars—this painting is mine," said a gray-haired man in his 50s, sitting at the main table. He smiled like dropping two million dollars was no big deal.

The man being addressed as "Mr. Odell" laughed and said, "Well, looks like someone knows what they're doing. Fine, I'll stop trying to get a bargain. I'll bid three million dollars."

Then, a rich-looking middle-aged woman chimed in with a smile, "Sorry, gentlemen, but I like this piece too. I'll bid 6.6 million dollars.

"You were all being too cheap earlier. Did you forget that this painting is supposed to cover the cost of Verdant Serenity? If one of you got it for a low price, that would've been a joke."

Most of the businessmen in the room were shocked, struggling to understand what was happening.

Those who had bid earlier were especially confused. They sat there, eyes wide, and couldn't believe what was going on.

This was just some painting by a guy named Nolan Greene that no one really knew. How could it be worth so much? Even if they wanted to impress the Baxter family, this seemed way over the top.

The weirdest part was that the people now making these crazy bids were powerful in their own right. They didn't need to spend this kind of money just to win the Baxters' favor.

Something big was definitely up, but what was it?

Megan's face went pale as she looked at Jeanne. "This is crazy. Am I losing my mind, or have they all gone nuts? How did things get this out of hand?
