Cindy pressed her lips together and hesitated for a moment before she took larger strides to catch up with Ian. “Hey. What do you want to eat for dinner?” she asked.
Ian turned sideways and gazed at her for a moment. She wore a pleasant smile on her face, and it seemed like she felt sorry for leaving him out earlier. Any frustration that Ian felt seemed to disappear in an instant. “What do you want to eat? We can have whatever you want.”
It was rare for Ian to be so nice to Cindy, and she felt rather shy just to have him treating her in such a manner. “What do you like eating?” she asked as she turned to look at Peter.
“Anything’s fine. I’m not picky,” Peter answered. Cindy nodded as she came to a decision. “Let’s eat near this area, then. We can look for restaurants around here.”
After that, the three of them walked side-by-side as they headed out of the residential area to find a restaurant near them. It was rather packed during that hour of the day, so Ian lowered his cap and pulled his collar up to cover his face. Cindy knew that things would get messy if someone recognized Ian, so she asked the waiter for a private room.
The waiter turned to check if there were any rooms available. Coincidentally, one of the tables had just paid for their meal, so the private room was freed up just in time for the three of them. Once they got into the room, Cindy took the initiative to sit beside Ian. When Peter took the seat opposite them, Ian felt a strong sense of relief.
Once the menu came, Cindy handed it over to Peter. “You can pick whatever you want to eat. I’m buying you a meal to thank you for the racket. It feels great to play with it.”
Ian felt even more at ease after hearing Cindy’s words. Cindy had always been one to repay her debts, so she was offering to buy Peter a meal after accepting his gift. They won’t owe each other anything after that, Ian thought. He was pleased with the way Cindy had handled this matter, so he participated in their conversation with a friendly tone of voice. “I saw the sign boards outside—this store’s signature dish is their fish. Why don’t we order one of those? You enjoy sports, so you should eat something that’s high in protein.”
Peter’s expression remained neutral as he looked through the menu before handing it back to Cindy. “I don’t mind anything. You can pick the dishes,” he offered. In the end, Cindy had no choice but to make the decision. “Let’s order their signature dish, then,” she said in accordance with Ian’s suggestion.
After picking a few other dishes, she handed the menu to Ian. “You can pick one or two more dishes. I’m not sure what else to order, so you guys can decide.”
Ian took the menu and picked another two dishes and a drink. Once the waiter took their order, Ian started a conversation about his game with Peter earlier. “Have you received professional training in the past? You’re really skilled in controlling your angles and strength.”
Peter smiled in response. “I didn’t receive professional training. Most of the time, I just watch videos and learn techniques from there.”
“While I was warming up, I heard someone say that people from your club participate in competitions sometimes,” Cindy uttered.
“Yeah,” Peter replied with a nod. “Some of the members participate in regional competitions. There are a lot of us in the club, and there are different people who are trained in different skills, so they participate in all sorts of competitions,” he explained. “Would you be interested in joining our club? We do other sports too. If you don’t fancy badminton, you can always try something else.”
Cindy instantly waved her hands to reject his offer. “Forget it! You played a few games with me earlier, and you know how bad I am with sports. I’m a slow learner, so I’d only be torturing myself if I ever joined your club.”
It was Peter’s natural instinct to reassure her concerns. “You’re not that bad! There are tons of other new members who were worse than you when they first came in. They eventually improved after a while. I think you did really well today. I feel like you played better than you did the last time.”
Cindy continued to wave him off. “Forget it. I might start work soon, so I won’t have much spare time after that.”
Ian nodded in response to this. “Her work is really demanding, so she might not be able to take any time off at all. I don’t think it’d be nice if she signed up for the club and didn’t show up after that.”
