"Yes," Cindy said. "I just got it today. Haven't finished it yet."
The woman pursed her lips. "There should be a lot of useful stuff in there."
Cindy told her honestly, "I guess so. At least I think it's useful so far."
That was how adults worked—they wouldn't be straightforward. They would poke and prod, but that was fine with Cindy. She would act dumb as long as they wouldn't say what they wanted explicitly.
The woman wouldn't be so explicit, so she stopped talking after Cindy refused to tell her anything.
Cindy went back to the office after lunch, and she wondered if she should skip the cafeteria entirely next time and go somewhere else for lunch. I get stared at every time, and I guess everyone will want to talk to me because of this file. Can't I have a simple workplace? Everyone just has to scheme, huh?
She came back to the office, but for some reason, everyone wasn't there, so she was alone, though she liked how it felt. She wanted her workplace to be one where she wouldn't get disturbed. She kept reading through the file, and when inspiration struck, she would come up with a design of her own.
Before this, she would still come across a designer's block even when she had inspiration, but thanks to the file, that block seldom happened that day. She worked a lot that afternoon, and time flew by.
Gary called her when she was about to get off work, but instead of asking her out for dinner, he just called to make some small talk and asked her if work was going well. Cindy felt that he knew what Mr. Kaufmann did, so she told him about it.
Gary grunted. "He's a smart man. That's why I told you to see him if you need anything."
Cindy wanted to laugh. He hasn't thought this through. I won't ask Mr. Kaufmann for help. What's more, he seldom shows up, so I can't see him even if I wanted to. Still, she said, "Yes. I understand."
Gary wasn't busy, so he chatted with her for a while longer, though it was only small talk. When she hung up, it was time to get off work, and this time, Cindy didn't go anywhere else, not after what happened the night before. She quickly packed up and went home. When she reached home, Ian called her, and she picked up at once. "You're done too?"
Ian asked, "Where are you now?"
Cindy answered confidently, "Home. Where else?"
She walked into the house and changed into her slippers before going into the living room, but the moment she came in, she realized something was wrong. When she went out that morning, she remembered leaving the bedroom door and window open to let the air flow, but now, the door was closed.
Cindy stopped moving. She had been living alone for a while, and she thought that there was a burglar in her house. However, she quickly thought about it and realized that the lock wasn't picked. Cindy took a deep breath and retreated to the foyer.
Then, Ian asked, "Why didn't you go on another date today?"
Cindy thought that sounded odd. It was as if two voices were overlapping. She heard his voice on the phone, and she also heard it around her. She stopped opening the front door and turned around to walk deeper into the house, then she dashed toward the bedroom and opened the door.

The readers' comments on the novel: The Returning EX (John and Sophia)
So what happens to Ian and Cindy. Is she/ or does she get pregnant? Do they go back to the city and Ian works with Logan? Does Aurora stay in the entertainment industry or return with Ian? Terrible ending, who cares if Aurora was drinking/drunk with colleagues. What happened with Ian and Cindy?!...
Get rid of Gary. Apparently Cindy is too dumb to figure out his motives 😡...
Why are you trying to break them up when they just got together and are a loving couple. Let them stay close and move back to their true friends, Logan, Lola, John and Sophia!...
Sure hope Ian pulls his head out of his behind and works this out with Cindy. His brother needs him at the company and neither one of them truly like the celebrity life. Sophia and Lola will love her …....
I can’t wait for John to take down the Bailey’s including Isabelle so he, Sophia, William and Matilda can live in peace. Introduce Yolanda to Richard so they are out of the picture....
Ugh, don’t break up Sophia and John… they belong together and Sophia is just stubborn for no reason...
Sophia lives John, he just needs to tell her he loves her and get on with their life and family. Too much interference from others....
Sophia is so stupid....
John needs to man up, tell his mother and Isabelle to take a flying leap and confess to Sophia that he made a horrible mistake in divorcing her. This story is taking too long and once again, the bitches are looking like they are on the right side. Awful...
