Chapter 283

“Xanthel Sean was taken aback, watching Xanthe walk away without looking back. He thought, ‘Seriously? Is she really mad just because of one comment?‘
Emily observed Sean’s reaction and felt a twinge of displeasure as she noticed all his attention was focused on Xanthe’s departing figure.
“She claimed she was pregnant with your child, but your parents didn’t like her, so she couldn’t get into the Nelson family. She even misunderstood our relationship, accusing me of trying to harm her child…” Emily couldn’t bring herself to say those last two words.
Sean’s mouth twitched hard. He thought, ‘Xanthe is something else. I just left not long ago, and she’d already come up with a new tactic to scare off another blind date?‘
He waved it off with a helpless smile. “She thought you were my date. She’s just making things up. Don’t take her seriously, Emily. That’s just how she is, no ill intentions.”
Emily furrowed her brows lightly. “Even if it was a misunderstanding, it was very rude of her to disrupt your date like that. What will others think of you?”
Sean scratched his head. “It’s a bit complicated to explain right now. Let’s not talk about her. Emily, we haven’t seen each other in years. You helped me a lot before you went abroad. Now that you’re back, we should catch up properly Let me treat you to dinner tonight.”
Emily’s eyes sparkled briefly before she regained her composed demeanor. “Alright.”
Xanthe was so frustrated with Sean that she took a cab to another fancy restaurant to treat herself. She thought, ‘No one is going to make me feel bad without a good meal!‘
After stuffing herself and heading home, Sean finally called. Seeing his name flash on her screen, Xanthe changed his contact to “Badass” and tossed her phone aside. “Oh, remember me after your date with a pretty girl? Bye–bye!”
Sean tried calling Xanthe multiple times without success. After agonizing over it, he started typing out a lengthy explanation about Emily. As the words piled up, he suddenly stopped himself
“Why am I explaining so much to her? Her dad still works for me, and she’s giving me attitude? No way, not happening!” Sean deleted the whole message and decided to let it go.

The day after Yvette got injured, she underwent kidney surgery. Two hours post–surgery, she awoke, groggy and in pain the anesthesia wore off.
as
Opening her eyes, she saw Rebecca by her bedside. Yvette tried to speak but even the slightest movement sent sharp pains through her body, as if her soul was being ripped from her flesh
Still unaware of what had happened, tears slid down her face. “It hurts…”
Rebecca woke with a start and, seeing Yvette awake, smiled despite her exhaustion and worry. “Yvette, you’re awake!”
“Pain…” Yvette uttered weakly.
Rebecca tried to soothe her. “The doctor said it’ll hurt a bit as the anesthesia fades. Yvette, you’re too weak for more meds right now, but the doctor said it’ll feel better in a couple of days. Hang in there, okay?”
Yvette was confused. “Surgery?”

Rebecca held her hand tightly, trying to calm her. “It’s okay, Yvette. They just removed one kidney. You’ll recover soon and be healthy and beautiful as ever.”
Yvette thought, ‘My kidney? I have lost a kidney!” “Why, why did you remove my kidney?” She, emotional, tried to get up.
Rebecca was startled, and Felix rushed over, quickly restrainingvette back onto the bed. His grip was firm, making Yvette’s bones ache.
She cried out desperately, “My kidney, why?”
Felix, devastated, explained what happened after she fell off the slope. Yvette felt like she’d been smacked with a harsh truth.
She thought, ‘So many people were around during the collapse, yet I was the only one to step on loose ground and fall. And just then, falling off the mountain, a branch pierced my kidney, and it had to be removed! How absurdly coincidental!
‘Where is my luck? The luck I snatched from Shakira? How does it come to this?‘
Yvette breathed carefully through the pain, tears streaming down her face filled with agony and resentment.
She thought, ‘I feel so tragically innocent, all because they pushed me to it. If Lonely Bird hadn’t pushed me… If Ella hadn’t betrayed me… If those crude villagers hadn’t insulted me and Felix had backed me… I wouldn’t be in this situation! It’s all their fault!‘
Yvette’s eyes were full of tears, her resentment hidden from Rebecca and Felix. Rebecca only knew that seeing her precious daughter cry so much broke her heart..
“Yvette, don’t cry. Seeing you cry makes me hurt so much. My dear, it’s my fault for not protecting you,” Rebecca sobbed, covering her face.
Felix looked weary and regretful. Even if he didn’t trust Yvette as he once did, he felt responsible for her injury. “Yvette, whatever you want, just say the word and I’ll do it.”
Yvette gritted her teeth in hatred. She thought, ‘I have lost my kidney–could you give yours to me?‘
Yvette stared blankly at the ceiling in despair. “Why save me? Felix doesn’t believe me, the villagers curse me, and everyone says I’m a bad person. What’s the point of living like this?”
“Yvette! No, it’s their fault. They’ve wronged you!” Rebecca’s heart shattered seeing her daughter’s fragility.
She continued, “Your father and Finn are already handling this. Ella, the villagers who indirectly harmed you, and the production team who failed to protect you. They’ll all pay for the pain they’ve caused you.”
Yvette’s eyes gleamed eerily. “What about Lonely Bird?”
Felix looked up sharply, frowning. “Lonely Bird is a victim in this too.”
Yvette recoiled in fear.
“Felix, at a time like this, how can you say such things to upset your sister?” Rebecca looked at her son in disbelief, her eyes filled with disappointment.
