Chapter 218
“Long time no see. You sure have changed a lot.” Marlene extended her hand toward Yvette.
Yvette didn’t shake it. Instead, she smiled politely. “You didn’t.”
Marlene was stunned, and she pulled her hand back. “Do you mind taking a walk with me?”
She had joined the Lane family before Yvette. When Yvette had just gotten engaged to Xavier, Marlene had always found her and chatted with her. It had seemed like she had been a sister to Yvette.
Then, Yvette had married Xavier, James had died, and the Snyder family had slowly hit rock bottom. Only then had Marlene revealed her true colors, Yvette had to admit that Marlene was born to be an actress.
As they walked on a small path outside, Marlene gently said, “Did you know? I didn’t get to sleep well when I heard you died five years ago. Back then, I was pregnant with Malcolm and almost had a miscarriage because of it.”
Being mature, Yvette didn’t expose her even though she knew the truth. “Was it because you were afraid?“.
Yvette smiled and purposely cracked a joke. “Were you afraid that I might haunt you at night?”
After she had married Xavier, Marlene had caused her a lot of trouble.
Once, Xavier had disappeared after he had gone abroad to deal with a project. Yvette had begged the Lanes and some higher authorities to make sure that nothing would happen to Lane Group. Everyone had thought that he was dead, and she had gone to Dibay alone to look for him.
She had been unfamiliar with the foreign country. Fortunately, she had run into Xavier’s business partner Not only had she helped Xavier close the deal, but Clifford had also noticed what she had done.
That was how she had gotten lucky enough to join the Lane family.
However, Marlene had messed it up for Yvette in the end. She had spread lies everywhere, saying that Yvette had seduced a big shot in Dibay. When Clifford had heard about it, he had been furious. He had punished Yvette by making her kneel for a whole day.
That was just one of many incidents. Yvette had lost count of how many times something like that had happened afterward.
Marlene was stunned, but she put on a fake smile. “You sure have become humorous after been away for
so long.”
As they walked, they arrived at a secluded area in the yard outside, not too far from Xavier’s residence.
Yvette remembered that place; it felt like she had been there when she had been younger. But after she had married Xavier, she had stopped going there.
She had asked the housekeepers what that area was used for, but they hadn’t known much either.
Marlene stood outside the yard and said, “Yvvy, remember you told me Xavier went out to look for you! because it was
raining heavily once?”
Yvette had told her that before she had married Xavier. She didn’t know what Marlene was trying to get
The latter raised an eyebrow. There’s something I’ve been curious about. You said he was gentle back.
