Amber had no idea how she fell asleep that night, but she woke up the next morning to a terrible headache. After making sure the coast was clear outside, she crept her way to the bathroom and washed up. She then scooped up her backpack and got ready to head to the library to do some research.
Her phone rang when she was putting on her sneakers in the foyer.
“Good morning, Amber. I’m sorry that I didn’t have time to call you back last night. Now, I’m all yours. Spill the tea and tell me all about your crush!” Emma was already full of pep although it was early in the morning.
“You shouldn’t take what I said last night too seriously because I was only joking.” Amber had no intention of delving into the subject at the moment. As Mia’s kittenish voice she heard last night was still resounding in her head, she would be throwing her self-esteem away if she still thought she stood a chance with Liam.
Emma was unconvinced. “Don’t try to bluff me by saying that! I know you too well to be sure that you’re lying. Answer me now—have you fallen in love with Liam Croft? He’s the most likely candidate I can think of!”
Emma’s spot-on guess startled Amber. She accidentally dropped her keys on the floor, producing a loud clinking noise.
Quickly, she stole a furtive glance at Liam’s bedroom. Seeing that the door was still shut, she reckoned that the lovey-dovey couple was still sleeping in each other’s embrace.
She stuffed her keys back into her trouser pockets and squirmed her feet into a pair of sneakers hurriedly. In an undertone, she denied vehemently, “What nonsense are you spouting? There’s no way I’m falling in love with Liam because we simply don’t belong to the same world! Well, I’ve got to go.”
To stop her from hanging up, Emma yelled, “Hey, you’re not allowed to end this call until you give me a clear explanation. Don’t tell me you still have feelings for Oliver.”
Amber, who was desperate to end the discussion, answered perfunctorily, “Yes, I still have feelings for Oliver. Are you satisfied now, Ms. King? Am I allowed to hang up now?”
In response, Emma mumbled in dissatisfaction, “I know you just said that to brush me off. The sun would be rising from the west if you still had feelings for him!”
With a faint smile, Amber replied, “Listen, I must get going now or there will be no seats left for me in the library.”
After ending the phone call with Emma, Amber closed the main door as gently as she could and left the apartment.
Right after the door was closed, Liam walked out of a corner well-hidden by a cabinet in the living room. His face looked unruffled as usual, but his hands were clenched tightly around a glass of water.
“What nonsense are you spouting? There’s no way I’m falling in love with Liam… Yes, I still have feelings for Oliver…”
He had heard what Amber said very clearly just now.
