What Separates Me and You novel Chapter 255

Chapter 255 It’s Me, Lewis

18-year-old Josephine might be sweet, understanding, and gentle, but she had also developed a temper of her own thanks to Lewis spoiling her for so long.

It was because she knew very well that she had a guardian who always backed her up wouldn’t let anyone bully her.

and

Even when Daphne pushed her around so much to the point that she got mad, she could always pounce on the former and start fighting back. Sometimes, Josephine could get so stubborn that no one could convince her to change her mind at all.

Back then, she was very confident. After all, Lewis was the source of her confidence.

18-year-old Josephine felt invincible because she was the apple of Lewis’ eye. That was why she was brave enough to fight the whole world.

Some people described her as Lewis’ mutt who often demonstrated a flair of bravado just because he was backing her up. They thought of her as a pathetic girl who treated Lewis’ words like a royal decree; she would gladly do anything he told her to.

Even if Lewis were to command her to jump off a building, Josephine would do so without batting an eyelid. She had faith that he would catch her from below.

If Josephine were to die from the fall, she would think that she had miscalculated the angle before breathing her last.

To Josephine, Lewis was akin to her religion, her god. She was his most devout believer.

Other people claimed that she, Josephine Vance, was nothing without Lewis.

After all, she was just a pathetic mute without a home to return to if Lewis Alvarez had never existed in her life.

Those people were right. Their words had come true.

Josephine’s guardian was already gone. She had become a mutt who didn’t have a home of her

own. Everyone could always come over and bully her relentlessly.

No matter how much she called out for him, he would never appear in front of her ever again.

No one else would back her

Josephine’s eyes reddened as she stared at the man in front of her. Soon, tears started rolling down her cheeks silently.

Those clear eyes of hers started to shatter bit by bit. Nothing but emptiness was swimming in those eyes. All that was left was a barren wasteland of nothingness.

It turned out that Lewis didn’t want her anymore.

Josephine’s hand hung by her side limply. At that moment, she had completely given up on struggling.

Soon, Lewis gradually loosened his grip around her neck.

He pulled Josephine into a tight embrace as though he wanted to mold her into his flesh and bones.

After that, he murmured into her ear, “It’s me, Lewis.”

Traces of panic could be heard in his hoarse voice.

Josephine’s eyes slid shut. She had no intention of replying to him.

However, she knew very well that the man wasn’t Lewis.

He wasn’t him.

She was already exhausted by then. As she remained trapped in Lewis’ arms while listening to his strong heartbeat, she started losing her ability to think.

Lewis released the woman in his arms when she finally stopped moving.

Her eyes remained shut, but there were teardrops hanging from her eyelashes, resulting in strands of her eyelashes being glued together. Her brows were tangled into a deep frown as well. More tears continued to slide down the corner of her eyes even though she was already asleep.

The man placed her back on the bed before caressing her cheek with a hand to wipe those tears

away.

Time was always the cruelest punishment. Some people, as well as some things, could never return to how they were in the past.

An adult could never fit into the clothes they used to wear when they were two years old. They wouldn’t be able to do cartwheels in the backyard without a worry in the world as well.

Similarly, the person Josephine wanted to be with would never be able to return to her side.

Even if said person was already standing before her, he was no longer the person she wanted

to be with.

Lewis sat on the spot next to Josephine the whole time. There was nothing but a tiny gap between them, yet that gap felt like a rift that was the size of the universe.

Meanwhile, Dr. Halliday stood at the doorway, not daring to enter the bedroom. He noticed how lonely the man’s silhouette was in the room. It was rare to see him looking so dejected

and lonely.

Hence, the doctor left the room quietly as though he never came here in the first place.

It kept snowing throughout the night.

The next morning was sunny. The outside world was covered in a thick blanket of snow, whereas the trees in the courtyard sprouted their new winter look.

Mrs. Larson and Mrs. White were in the midst of paving the driveway. They worked hard to pile the snow in a corner to reveal the driveway.

Josephine was awakened by the loud noises of the shovels scraping against the ground. Her eyelashes trembled slightly as she struggled to crack her eyes open.

As she looked up at the ceiling, a strong wave of disappointment and sorrow flooded through. her system once again.

Fresh tears glistened in her eyes while waves of fatigue soon took over her body. Josephine didn’t even feel like sitting up.

Suddenly, she turned her head as though she had sensed something. She was stunned upon

noticing the man sitting near the headboard.

He was wearing a black shirt. In fact, his appearance was already immaculate. He happened to be leaning against the headboard while bowing his head so that he could stare at her.

For a moment, Josephine fell into a daze upon making contact with Lewis’ eyes.

None of them spoke a word.

She could no longer remember what happened last night. That man was still a stranger to her.

Even if he shared the same face as Lewis, Josephine couldn’t detect a trace of familiarity in his

eyes.

One’s eyes would always tell the truth.

Josephine quickly clambered from the bed while ignoring the man beside her. Then, she waddled out of the bedroom.

Lewis followed her down the stairs. Both of them didn’t say a word to each other as they walked.

Mrs. Larson wanted to let them know that breakfast was ready, but she kept her mouth shut after sensing the weird atmosphere between them.

Josephine walked past the housekeeper and headed for the main door instead.

“Um-” Mrs. Larson stared at the silhouette, which was about to pass through the door. Before she trailed after Josephine, Mrs. Larson turned back to look at Lewis and said, “I’ll follow Madam around.”

“It’s fine.” Lewis left the mansion in wide strides after leaving the two-worded response behind.

Once Josephine walked out of the mansion, she looked a little confused upon noticing the white snow covering everything around her. It seemed as though the world had completely changed overnight.

All she could see was white.

The sun was out, but its rays did nothing but sting her eyes. There wasn’t a trace of warmth at all

Josephine proceeded along the path, her footsteps crunching loudly on the snow with each stride. Some of the snow seeped into her shoes, instantly melting and sending a shiver of coldness through her body.

After walking for a very long time, Josephine finally noticed a cab that was about to pass by.

She flagged it down before showing the driver the address on her phone. The latter nodded, clearly understanding his mission.
