Josephine was stunned when she learned Lewis was looking for her.
Why would Lewis suddenly want to see her?
Before she could inquire further, Conrad rushed through his explanation on the phone. "You might want to finish your meal quickly and head over. Otherwise, Chairman Alvarez might come to the department to find you."
A bad feeling loomed over Josephine when she heard that. Before she could delve into more questions, Conrad had already hung up.
"What's wrong?" Wendy asked with concern.
Josephine pocketed her phone and forced a smile. "Nothing, let's just eat."
Wendy gave her a suspicious look. Josephine's expression had changed after taking the call. Something must be going on.
However, Wendy wouldn't pry if Josephine didn't want to share her problems.
Josephine hurriedly finished her meal and returned her tray to the collection bin before heading to Lewis' office.
She had been to his office many times before. So she knew her way around. Knocking lightly on the door, she waited for his response.
After a moment, a man's voice came from inside. "Come in."
Josephine entered and saw Lewis standing by the floor-to-ceiling window. His hands were in his pockets, and he had his back to her.
She hesitated briefly before walking toward him.
"Why did you call me here?"
Lewis turned around and condescendingly looked at her. His back was against the light, making it hard for Josephine to see his face clearly. She lifted her head and tried to make out his features. However, the bright light from outside was too blinding, making it impossible for her to open her eyes.
He stared at her in silence.
Although Josephine couldn't discern his expression, she could feel his scorching gaze on her.
She lowered her head to avoid his gaze. "If there's nothing else, I'll head back to work."
Josephine finished speaking and was about to leave, but she suddenly felt a grip on her wrist. Her eyes narrowed. Lewis spun her around, and her back collided with the floor-to-ceiling glass.
Startled, she looked up. This time, she saw Lewis' face. They had switched positions, and he was now facing the light, his face almost blindingly white.
Lewis bent down slightly and cupped her face.
Josephine's gaze flickered, her heartbeat accelerating. She wasn't sure what he was up to this time.
His face was getting closer, and it seemed like he was about to kiss her.
Josephine raised her hand to push him away, but Lewis grabbed her wrist and pinned it against the glass.
"What are you doing?" Josephine's frustration was evident. After restraining himself for so long, he was revealing his true self again today.
Lewis was very close to her. Their lips were almost touching.
The two of them remained in this ambiguous posture and distance. Lewis didn't continue moving forward.
Finally, Lewis spoke, "What? So, it's fine for Seth to kiss you, but not me?"
Josephine was startled.
So, it was about that incident.
She recalled what happened in the car. If the bodyguard had seen her and Seth from outside, it could have led to misunderstandings.
Yet it wasn't quite a misunderstanding as they were just a step away from it. Their distance was similar to her distance with Lewis now.
"Aren't you going to explain?"
Lewis' icy gaze met hers. She suddenly found it a bit amusing. "Explain what?"
Lewis narrowed his eyes.
Josephine said, "We're not related to each other now. Why should I explain to you?"
"What do you mean we're not related?" He pulled out a certificate and placed it before Josephine. "Do you still think we're unrelated?"
Josephine saw the word "Marriage Certificate" on it, and her eyes widened in surprise.
"When did you get this?"
"Guess."
Josephine struggled to break free from his grip. She grabbed the marriage certificate from him and opened it. There was indeed their photo on it, and it was registered yesterday!
