Wolf-less Omega Luna novel Chapter 38

Alana’s POV

I exited the party too early, went back to the house, and quickly jumped in the shower as though I was being chased.

I didn’t know if Axel saw me leaving but I hoped not, —which was practically impossible seeing how his eyes were on me all through.—

What was I going to say to him after his confession today?

After a quick shower and a change of clothes into something more comfortable, I hopped in bed with my new read in hand, flipping the pages almost too quickly, and not paying attention to any of the ink.

At some point, I completely deflected and began to think.

So much had happened within the last few weeks that had led to where I was now.

I’d been beaten and left for dead in a dungeon, ran for my life from an attack from the same man who destroyed my former pack, repeatedly slept with the Alpha of my pack, flopped as a Luna and I finally made it out on top with gift baskets to show for it.

Now, my said mate and alpha had told me that he’s ready to be with me for life and I’m out here hesitating like a snail.

As his mate, marking was inevitable. I had even lost count of the number of times that my newly acquired fangs had grazed over his spot wanting to sink into it and drink him dry.

Whatever fears I have are just in my head and …

The thud of heavy footsteps in the hallway heading in my direction told me that it was none other than Axel. Not just that, the feeling I got whenever he was around or whenever his eyes were on me was tugging at me like crazy as the footsteps approached.

I quickly closed the book and hurled the covers over my head, pretending to be asleep. Hopefully, he bought it. The soft click of the door as well as the heat seeping from his bones towards me announced his presence.

“I could tell you were awake even before I got in the building, Alana.” Axel’s thick and sultry voice spread a wave of heat through me, that made me duck back the covers.

“Hey,” it barely came out as a whisper.

“Avoiding each other now, are we?”

I let out a nervous and humorless laugh, honestly because there was nothing funny for me to laugh at.

Since he was here and he wasn’t playing around, I decided to throw my cards all on the table and get right to it.

“I was a little overwhelmed by what you said back there,” I began. Axel’s face remained calm, his lips sealed in a thin line, giving me the entire floor to say whatever I wanted to.

I took that as my cue and continued. “For as long as I could remember, all I wanted was to find my parents after being separated from them for so long, not knowing if they’re still alive or dead.” I took a sharp inhale for stealth perhaps? “But recently you’ve shown me that my life could be so much more than hanging on to the unknown. I could be a real part of this pack, and I could start something that's entirely mine.”

He took a few slow but long strides to my side of the bed and that caused my heart to skip a beat and my breath to hitch.

“So why are you holding back?” The commanding tone of his voice would have drawn the truth out of me even if I didn’t want to admit the obvious.

“I guess I was…am… scared,” I admitted with a shrug. “All of this is still so surreal to me. Everything in my life has changed and it’s freaking scary. So much will be expected of me and I don’t know how much of it I’d be able to cope with. And what if you end up getting tired of me?”

His heavy weight pressed on the bed, dipping it and bringing his once towering frame somewhere near my eye level.
