As Cedrick took a deep breath, he couldn’t help but feel a burning sensation in his nose.
Over the last half a year, he had escaped from the jaws of death many times and went through hell and high water with Gwendolyn. Only God knew how much he desired and was looking forward to finally receiving the marriage certificate.
As tears clouded his vision, he bit his lower lip and curled into Gwendolyn’s arms before burying his face in her shoulders.
With her arms wrapped around his broad back, she patted him gently to comfort him.
Cedrick kept his head down as he sobbed inaudibly. It wasn’t until a short while later that he regained his composure and uttered in a deep voice, “The strong wind has caused sand to enter my eyes. Let’s hurry home now, Gwenny.”
Gwendolyn played along with a smile. “You’re right. The wind is kicking up a lot of dust. If we stay here any longer, even my eyes will turn red.”
With that, both of them held each other’s hands and clasped their fingers tightly together.
Even though registering the marriage was a glorious occasion, Cedrick and Gwendolyn decided to keep the matter under wraps.
They didn’t receive any congratulatory messages or spark an uproar. All they did was spend the day quietly as if it was just another uneventful day of their lives.
When evening arrived, Cedrick invited Nico and Summer over for dinner. They planned to open a bottle of wine and enjoy a simple celebration together.
Since Nico didn’t know how to cook, he assisted Cedrick in the kitchen.
As for Summer, she watched TV together with Gwendolyn while helping her peel some fruits.
Once in a while, voices of men arguing could be heard from the kitchen.
“Cedrick, what should I do with this vegetable?”
“Remove its stalk and cut it into smaller pieces.”
A short while later, Nico’s voice rang out again. “How many pieces do you think is appropriate?”
Thereafter, another question was heard. “Cedrick, how do I peel garlic?”
“Cedrick, what shape should I cut the meat into?”
“Cedrick, the prawns look pretty clean. Do you still want to remove their veins? By the way, how do I do it?”
“Cedrick…”
Unable to endure it any longer, Cedrick blew his top. “Get out!”
Nico let out a cry before he was forcefully pushed out.
Meanwhile, the two women stared at him from the couch.
Scratching his head in embarrassment, Nico pointed his finger behind him. “Cedrick seems to be in a good mood today, so he plans to single-handedly cook up a storm for us!”
A sarcastic snort was immediately heard from Summer.
“You’re such an idiot, Nico. When will you ever become like Mr. Jenson and learn how to cook? Stop making me do all the chores already!”
“What are you blabbering about in front of Gwendolyn? Since when did I make you do all the chores?”
Lacking confidence, Nico leaned over and sat next to Summer. “You seemed to have put on weight recently. Even your cheeks have grown chubbier. Who do you think has been working hard and paying for all your food?”
“I’ve put on weight?”
Summer cupped her cheeks as a horrified look flashed across her eyes. “Gwendolyn, have I become ugly?”
Pursing her lips into a smile, Gwendolyn pinched Summer on her cheeks. “You’re not fat or ugly. You look perfect. In fact, you’re growing increasingly gorgeous.”
Reassured by Gwendolyn’s words, Summer shot Nico a glare as she complained, “Look at him, Gwendolyn. He’s nothing but a clueless boy. Does he not know one can never call a girl fat? This is outrageous!”
Nodding matter-of-factly, Gwendolyn added fuel to the fire. “It’s outrageous indeed. He needs to be taught a lesson. I happen to have a stick in the storeroom. Do you want to use it to put him in his place?”
“Can I really?” Summer’s eyes lit up in excitement.
She had been itching to teach him a lesson for a long time.
Gwendolyn egged her on. “Yes, you can. I’ll be the judge here. You can hit him all you want, and Nico isn’t allowed to dodge.”
With that, Summer hurried to the storeroom to retrieve the stick and returned with a devious look on her face.
