Wooing My ex-wife (Gwendolyn and Maverick) novel Chapter 614

Chapter 614 Finish Our Business

Gwendolyn, unfortunately, had run out of patience.

“In that case, I think you should head home first, Logan. Cedrick's busy with work and won't be free anytime soon. He has to work overtime till ten tonight, too. Tell you what, I'll get him to meet Grandpa at the Jenson residence once he has knocked off.”

Logan was caught in a tight spot.

No. I can't leave... I can't go back without completing the task Old Mr. Jenson has given me.

“Mrs. Jenson, I'm here today because of what happened to Mr. Xander and Mr. Yael. Old Mr. Jenson already knows that Mr. Jenson locked Mr. Xander up with some thugs and caused him to be badly bullied. He hopes—”

“Logan, Cedrick did what he did to seek justice for me and Grandpa, and Xander's merely getting what he deserves. Are you telling me Grandpa can't bear to see Xander get a little punishment?” Alas, Gwendolyn had heard enough and furrowed her brows in displeasure.

“That's not what I meant, Mrs. Jenson,” Logan replied as a sheepish smile crept across his face. “Old Mr. Jenson is a strict man, and he agrees that Mr. Xander has overstepped the mark this time. He has no objections if Mr. Jenson chooses to hit or whip Mr. Xander, but he doesn't think a family matter should be escalated to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Surely, we can settle this at home, can't we?”

Gwendolyn leaned back lazily on the couch, her expression turning grimmer by the second.

Is this because of pride? Is Grandpa trying to keep the Jenson family's internal conflicts out of the public eye and prevent Xander from getting a criminal record? Or is Grandpa worried that Xander might not adapt to life in prison and end up losing his mind or killing himself? Or... could all these merely be excuses and Grandpa's hiding his real intentions?

Gwendolyn sighed and instinctively glanced at the small bathroom.

Oh, dear... I can't help but feel sorry for Cedrick. He used to regard Grandpa as his most important family member, but now, even I have begun to suspect Grandpa's motives. What if the truth comes to light one day, only for us to realize it isn't as pretty as we thought? What will happen to Cedrick?

Seconds later, Gwendolyn looked away and lowered her eyes. “Does Grandpa think Xander can survive sixty lashes?”

“Mr. Xander has a weak constitution. Sixty lashes of the whip will undoubtedly cost him his life. However, the purpose of Mr. Jenson punishing Mr. Xander is to teach him a lesson and not to kill him. In that case, why can't we be more flexible? Why must we follow the rules so rigidly?” Logan answered.

“Stop beating around the bush, Logan. Please speak your mind.”

“Old Mr. Jenson hopes that the sixty lashes can be doled out over three sessions and that Mr. Xander be given half a month to heal between each of them.”

Gwendolyn instantly fell silent, but her expression was dark and gloomy.

This is about imposing just punishment, so why must they always negotiate and test Cedrick's limit? I can't believe they're even suggesting an installment plan! Do they think this is a loan repayment? In any case, it's clear that Grandpa dotes on that grandson of his...

Since Gwendolyn wasn't retorting, Logan continued, “Old Mr. Jenson has also said that if Mr. Jenson agrees to those terms, he'll immediately tell him the truth he wants to know.”

Gwendolyn once again fell silent and stole glances at the bathroom.

I don't think Cedrick has any intention of coming out, huh? This has to do with the truth of his parents' fatal accident all those years ago. As much as I want to, I can't decide for him...

“You should go back, Logan. I'll relay the message from you and Grandpa to Cedrick. Whether he accepts it or not, I'll make sure he calls Grandpa as soon as possible. How does that sound?”

Logan had no choice but to give in. “It's getting late. Old Mr. Jenson isn't in the best of health and needs to rest early. I hope Mr. Jenson can spare a thought for him and call him within the next thirty minutes.”

“All right, I understand. Grandpa's health comes first,” Gwendolyn said politely before getting up and seeing Logan off. “Have a safe trip, Logan.”

After closing the office door, Gwendolyn walked toward the ensuite bathroom and pushed the glass door, only to see Cedrick leaning against the wall, seemingly deep in thought as he pondered Valentino's terms.

“What do you think about Grandpa's terms, Hubby?”

“What would you do if it were up to you, Darling?” Cedrick asked.

Knowing how much Valentino meant to Cedrick, Gwendolyn decided to drop her charge against Xander for almost implicating her.

“Xander's mainly responsible for almost harming Grandpa, but since Grandpa doesn't wish to pursue the matter, it's okay to give him a lighter punishment. Besides, given Xander's character, I'm sure he'd do something stupid again soon. We can catch him in the act then and teach him a well-deserved lesson. Compared to that, I think the truth behind Mom and Dad's accident is way more important,” Gwendolyn reasoned. She was as clear-headed and astute as always. “However, we can't guarantee that Grandpa will be entirely honest with us. Therefore, I suggest we hear the truth from both sides while Xander's still locked up and has no means of communicating with the rest of the family.”

Cedrick gazed at his wife standing at the bathroom door, unable to take his eyes off her.

Wow. Even though Gwenny's just standing there and analyzing the situation for me, the white glow around her from the office lights really brings out her ethereal beauty. Every word and action of hers takes my breath away...

The man strode forward and grabbed her slender waist.
