Chapter 140
Jason’s right hand tenderly caressed her face. He broke the silence with an uncharacteristically gentle inquiry, “Lost the case?”
That just didn’t make any sense. The court proceedings had only just begun. Estrella was charging the defendant with intentional harm and murder. Such a lawsuit wouldn’t usually be resolved so quickly.
Propping herself up slightly, Estrella, lay on her side on the bed, gazing up at Jason to complain, “The defendant punctured all four of my tires. What a jerk.”
One would have been bad enough, but all four? The thought still irked Estrella.
Jason’s expression darkened as he listened to her, his grip tightening on her hand.
But then Estrella continued, “After such a long day, I just wanted to sleep, but I’ve been tossing and turning without a wink of shut-eye.”
Jason’s gloomy face softened into a smile as he teased, “It’s rare to see you this riled up. You can’t even sleep.”
Typically, Estrella was unfazed by the world’s troubles, going about her business as if the sky were always blue.
Before Estrella could respond, Jason brushed aside the strands of hair on her face, suggesting, “Marie mentioned you skipped dinner. Why don’t you go have a bite? Leave work at the office. If you’re struggling with evidence, I could send Drew to handle it.”
Estrella resisted, “Keep out of my work matters. I can handle it.” If she needed Jason’s help for her job, what was the point of her years of hard work and education?
Jason insisted, “At least go eat something.”
Estrella flopped back onto the bed. “I’m not hungry.”
The night was young, and their room was a haven of tranquility. It had been a long while since they’d enjoyed such a leisurely chat.
Jason found Estrella’s willingness to banter a delightful treat, feeling their distance wasn’t as vast as before. Seeing Estrella sprawled on the bed again, he leaned in to kiss her cheek, playfully threatening, “If you’re not coming down, I’m getting undressed.”
Estrella, lying there, casually slipped off her nightgown, revealing her porcelain shoulders.. “Come on! I’ve been waiting.”
Jason was momentarily speechless. Estrella was growing too accustomed to his bluffs.
Pulling her nightgown back up, Jason effortlessly scooped her up from the bed. “Let’s get some food in you first, or you’ll be complaining halfway through.”

Chapter 140
With her arms around his neck, Estrella looked into his eyes, “Jason, you seem different tonight.” He seemed gentler and more patient, almost like he was guiding her.
Jason met her gaze. “You seem different tonight, too.”
Estrella quipped, “I’m different every day and always ready to surprise you.”
Jason teased back, “Then surprise me tonight and be my maid.” Since she claimed to be ever-changing, he’d picked something totally out of character for her.
Estrella, still clinging to his neck, held out her hand. “Pay up.”
Jason whispered something saucy in her ear, prompting Estrella to look at him like he was a pervert, followed by a chuckle, “Stingy as ever.”
As Jason carried Estrella downstairs, Marie greeted them with joy, “Ah, you’ve come down! Mr. Jason always knows how to handle you, Ms. Estrella. What would you like, dear?”
Estrella stepped out of Jason’s embrace. “Just some light dessert and fruit.”
။
Marie beamed, “The fruit compote is still warm, and I’ll prepare a fresh fruit plate.”
The couple chatted sporadically by the dining table while Marie bustled around them, her smile never fading. After more than two years, the pair had finally had their epiphany, enjoying the clear moon after the storm clouds.
After their late-night snack, they headed back upstairs, and Jason called for Estrella to join him for a shower. She, however, was at her computer. “I’ve got some work to finish. You go ahead.”
After teasing her a bit and getting a promise that she’d join him later, Jason relented and headed to the bathroom. Soon enough, he emerged to find Estrella, now with glasses on,
all business at her desk.
Rubbing his damp hair and tossing his towel aside, Jason embraced her from behind, his warm face nuzzling against hers, “I’m done.”
“Mhm,” Estrella replied distractedly, typing away, “I’ll be there in a bit.” She hadn’t planned on working late, but the dessert had sparked her thoughts anew.
Jason fell silent but didn’t let go, holding her while she remained focused on her work. His hand wandered from her waist to the softness of her chest, causing Estrella to squirm uncomfortably.
Estrella shot him a glance. “Stop it!”
“You do your thing. I’ll do mine,” Jason replied nonchalantly.
Estrella had always thought herself more brazen than Jason, able to voice things he wouldn’t dare. But she’d come to realize that his public decorum was just a facade. In
