“Do you really think I enjoy scaling walls? Obviously, it's because your father and brother forbade me from seeing you,” Wanyu complained, rolling her eyes.
“Why is that? Why don't my father and brother allow you to see me?”
Angie was puzzled.
“How would I know?” Meng Wanyu spread her hands.
“They said that you were about to get married. Hence, you're not supposed to see anyone. Sensing something amiss, I decided to come in and take a look.”
“Huh? Marriage?” Angie was dumbfounded, as she had no idea what Meng Wanyu was talking about.
“Why? Don't you know anything about it? A few days later, you will be married to Chu Qitian of the Chu family. In fact, the Chu residence has been extremely busy over the last few days. They have been decorating the place and bringing in loads of fresh flowers to the extent of turning Mount Chumen into a sea of red. Only the wedding of a son of the Chu family would deserve such pomp and fanfare,” Meng
Wanyu lamented.
“Wanyu, are you kidding me? Why am I not aware of my own wedding? Can it be that my father and brother are hiding it from me? That aside, my father just told me that he is reluctant for me to get married. Therefore, you must have made a mistake. Even if there is to be a wedding, I'm sure that I'm not the bride.”
Angie laughed as she couldn't believe that she was about to be married off.
“Oh my God! Do you think that I'm lying to you? The Chu family has even sent out the wedding invitations. In fact, the rich and famous of the world probably know about it already. Furthermore, it's written in black and white: 'The daughter of the Jones family, Angie Jones.' If you don't believe me, you can ask him.”
Meng Wanyu was surprised that the wedding had been kept from the bride.
Nevertheless, Angie still held out hope as she asked, “Mr. Nuo, tell me that Wanyu's words aren't true. And that my father and brother are not trying to marry me off. Also, I'm not the bride of the Chu family's wedding.”
Angie's trembling voice sounded as if she was pleading with Nuo to deny what was happening.
Unfortunately, Nuo hung his head and didn't say a word.
Finally, he let out a long sigh.
“Angie, don't blame them. You were betrothed to Mr. Chu a long time ago as part of a marriage alliance. Your father wanted to tell you about it when you were older. But due to a change in circumstances, they had no choice but to bring forward the wedding,” Nuo explained with a grim tone.
He was cognizant that what was happening wasn't fair to Angie. Sadly, the world wasn't a fair place to begin with.
Even though she was born into a rich and prominent family, she wasn't in control of her own fate. Truth be told, she was nothing but a pawn for her family's benefit.
Upon learning the truth, Angie's eyes reddened.
Unable to hold back her tears any longer, they began to rain down on her cheeks.
“No, it's impossible. You're lying to me. You have to be. Given how much my father and brother love me, there's no way they would marry me off to a stranger. It just isn't possible. 1-1 don't believe it at all!” Angie yelled hysterically as tears were strewn all over her face.
Suddenly, as if she had gone mad, Angie dashed out of the courtyard.
“Angie, where are you going?” Meng Wanyu asked anxiously.
“I'm going confront my father about it. I want to ask them if they are abandoning me!” Angie screamed in tears.
However, Meng Wanyu let out a sigh instead. “Angie, it's useless. The courtyard has been sealed. There are Grandmasters keeping watch outside. Hence, there's no way you can leave, let alone see your father and brother,” Meng Wanyu explained.
