John really had no idea if he could take another blow, only for his shred of hope to be ultimately crushed.

"I thought it was over between us," Cordy said softly, looking at John and his tense reaction. "We’ve gone through so much... doubt, death, and having someone else, that I really thought was one bridge too far."

John looked at Cordy nervously, yearning so much to tell her that it was not the case.

He could admit that he really did forget about her in his amnesia, but when he saw her again, he could not stop himself from getting close to her...

Even so, he could not say a word just then, worried that he would choke with tears before he could speak.

He merely looked at her longingly, while Cordy's voice was no longer choking with tears. ‘I don't know if we would regain those feelings for each other. I don’t know how you or I felt before, or whether I could love you again without anything getting in the way..."
