In the middle of the quiet meal, John's phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller, and his expression twisted slightly.

"It's Grandpa."

Cordy's eyes twitched slightly, but she continued looking down and eating her breakfast. John would take it outside and away from her hearing range if it were a private call.

After all, that's what happened every time Jessica called.

"What is it?"

After a moment, a hint of panic flashed across John's face.

Cordy wondered what had happened that could cause John's mood to change so drastically. She could see his hand holding the phone had also started to shake.

His eyes also seemed to have reddened.

"Okay. I got it."

John put his phone down and sat silently for a long time, his eyes staring at nothing in particular.

"What happened?" Cordy finally asked.

What had overwhelmed John to this state?

"Jay, he... there's been an accident," John said, clearly trying his best to control the emotions in his voice.

Cordy felt her heart get stuck in her throat.

Judging by the look on John's face, it was not a minor accident.

"Last night, his car rolled off the mountainside at eleven. It was a completely different slope than the one your accident was at. They only managed to rescue him at five this morning. He's still in critical condition at the hospital right now. They're not sure if he'll make it."

John sounded choked up, and he was clearly struggling to keep calm.

Cordy was anxious then, and she didn't know what to say, much less how to comfort him.

"I have to go back," John said bluntly.

Cordy nodded. "I'll go with you-"
