A Love Buried by Secrets novel Chapter 15

Julian's expression suggested that he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

He paused before asking Serena, "Are you saying that you want to call off our engagement?"

She hesitated, nodded, then shook her head. "I just think my sudden arrival has been a burden to you. Our families arranged this marriage when we were children. It shouldn't make you leave someone you love just to stay with me."

Julian understood immediately that he'd misunderstood. His faint smile held a quiet resignation.

"You could never be a burden. Truthfully, I've been counting the days since Ms. Foster told me that you were coming. I understand you're here for your treatment, and I'd never force you into marriage because of some childhood arrangement.

"I only ask that you consider giving me a chance once you can walk again. Then, you can decide for yourself if you truly want this marriage. Fair enough?"

Julian spoke deliberately, his words carefully considered. With no reason to object, Serena gave a slight nod beneath his watchful gaze and settled into the villa.

He had converted one room into a fully-equipped operating space, gathering all necessary medical instruments before examining Serena's legs.

The delayed treatment following her car accident had left her limbs paralyzed. It was so severe that even the country's finest specialists couldn't help it.

Julian had studied Serena's scans a month prior. With the proper surgical intervention and committed rehabilitation, he'd been confident that she could make a full recovery.

Yet, his current examination revealed alarming deterioration. The original severe bruising and muscle deterioration remained, but now, angry burn marks spread across significant areas of her legs.

A shadow of concern crossed Julian's face as he tried to picture what she must have endured to end up with such severe scars.

What pained him most was how she appeared utterly indifferent to the state of her legs. She just kept her head bowed, calm and composed.

"Your injuries have gotten worse," Julian quietly remarked.

At the memory of the raging fire that had nearly trapped her for good, Serena bit her lower lip and said nothing.

"The good news is your muscles and bones are intact. You have a strong chance of recovery. But right now, your health is too weak. You'll need time to rest and build up your strength before surgery. Rena, you should mentally brace yourself."

She nodded in response.
