No matter how clever Melody was, she was still young. In front of a cunning man like Wayne, she had no way to hide her tricks. It was obvious she was using Douglas as a pawn, and Wayne saw right through it.
Naturally, he was furious.
"Everyone knows how much Edward cherishes Sierra. Even when Benson messed things up and their relationship fell apart, she still ended up marrying one of the Grays. Why? Because Edward didn't trust anyone else to take care of her. He was afraid she'd be mistreated.
"Whether or not she and Theo have feelings for each other, she is undeniably his wife and the daughter-in-law of the Gray family. Do you think you can just insult her as you please?
"She nearly died because of Melody. And now she's supposed to apologize? What makes your precious Melody so special?"
…
Wayne pointed a finger at Douglas' face while cursing and mocking him nonstop. Douglas was so embarrassed that he wanted to bury his head in the ground. His face changed colors.
When Wayne finally finished venting, he cautiously asked, "Dad, I've already offended them. What do we do now?"
"What do we do? Nothing," Wayne snapped, glaring at him before taking a sip of water. Then, his tone deepened. "The fact that Theo set conditions means the situation hasn't reached the point of no return.
"In a couple of days, you'll personally take the project documents to Southridge Heights and hand them to his wife yourself. Then, you'll have to apologize properly."
Douglas nodded obediently, feeling a wave of regret. His relationship with Theo had taken a hit. Who knew if Theo still regarded him as a friend?
After leaving Wayne's office, he went to the stairwell for a smoke. After he finished one cigarette, he pulled out his phone. "Hey, Melody, the issue at the stables is settled."
Melody was in her room. Her injured foot was no longer swollen but still aching. She wasn't surprised at all to hear this and showed no emotion.
Still, she spoke apologetically, "This was my fault. I hadn't ridden in a long time and never expected it would cause Ms. Shaw such harm. Even though she wasn't injured, I should still apologize to her, right?"
