Chapter 376 Willing to Risk His Life 

Claire had just picked up the latest LV handbag when Arthur spoke, and with a loud thud, it slipped from her hands and hit the floor. She wondered nervously, “Frederick found out I’m here with Arthur?” 

Arthur looked apologetic, saying, “I’m sorry, Claire. I did everything I could to cover your tracks, but I couldn’t hide it completely. You know Frederick controls the entire Kingstown Security Department. 

“If he wants to find something, it’s a piece of cake. Honestly, I thought the car accident and explosion back then would convince him you were dead and make him stop investigating. 

‘But I didn’t expect him to pick up on clues so quickly. Still, it’s my fault for not being thorough. But don’t worry. If you don’t want to leave, if you don’t want to go back to him, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you here. 

“Even if he shows up at my door, I won’t let him take you. Unless, of course, he steps over my dead body first!” Arthur declared, his voice firm and resolute. 

Claire stood there in stunned silence, her gaze locked on Arthur. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. 

“What did Arthur just say? That Frederick would have to step over his dead body to take me? He’s willing to risk his life for

me?” she wondered, her thoughts swirling in disbelief. 

Claire didn’t move for what felt like ages, staring at Arthur, her eyes wide with shock, unable to say a word. Her mind was reeling. 

“Believe me, Claire. I mean every word,” Arthur insisted, 

noticing her reaction. He stepped closer, extending his hand as he swore an unshakable oath. 

“Thank you… Thank you, Mr. Arthur Hawthorne,” she finally said after a long pause, her voice quiet but sincere. Then, she turned and left. 

At that moment, Claire didn’t know what else to say. Beyond gratitude, she was at a loss for words. She had never imagined that someone would sacrifice so much for her. 

The man she had once feared most had now become her greatest protector. And Frederick–the man she had loved for over 20 years, the one she had dreamed of growing old with—was now the one trying again and again to destroy her. 

After returning to her room, Claire sat motionless, staring blankly out of the floor–to–ceiling window. She gazed at the white clouds drifting across the vibrant blue sky, watched as the sun slowly sank behind the mountains, and followed the final rays of the sunset as they disappeared beneath the horizon. She then saw the moon rise gradually into the night sky, with stars emerging one by one like tiny, brilliant jewels. 

Claire simply sat there, staring. Her mind was utterly blank,

void of any coherent thoughts. She didn’t even know what kind of state she was in at that moment. 

It could be that she had surrendered to the inevitable, accepting it with a weary sense of resignation. Or perhaps her heart, never full of hope to begin with, was slowly sinking as she braced herself to return to Frederick once again. Or maybe, deep down, she honestly had no clue what to do and was just clinging to the fleeting comfort of avoiding the truth for another moment. 

From morning to night, Claire sat in the same spot. By the time she realized how long it had been, her entire body was stiff, her blood felt like it had stopped flowing, and her legs had gone completely numb. It wasn’t until she attempted to move that the discomfort jolted her back to reality. 

As she braced herself to stand, a sudden bang echoed from downstairs. Her heart skipped a beat. She knew that sound all too well–it was a gunshot. After practicing so much with firearms, she was intimately familiar with them. 

Without hesitation, Claire thought of Frederick. Her chest tightened as she scrambled to her feet. But after sitting in the same position for so long, the lower half of her body had gone numb. The moment she stood, her legs gave out, and she collapsed to her knees with a thud. 

Before she could recover, a second gunshot rang out from below. Pain shot through her knees, but she barely noticed. She rubbed them briefly, pushed through the discomfort, and hurried out of her room, bolting for the stairs.
