I stared at him, disbelief etched on my face. 

I’m incredulous. So that’s why, the other day, Shirley seemed so excited–not because of being with 

Maurice, but because she heard the news of her mother from him. 

A flicker of realization crossed Maurice’s face. He saw the doubt in my eyes, the uncertainty that began to creep in. “Don’t you see? You misunderstood Shirley.”
