Aveline was a bit surprised by Russell’s suggestion and then said, “No need, Russ. I’ve already had dinner.” 

Russell responded, “We could still have a late–night snack. Aveline, I’m 

genuinely happy for you.” 

Aveline replied, “Let’s wait until everyone has time, then we can all go out for a meal together.” 

This subtly indicated that she didn’t want to dine with him alone. 

Russell fell silent for a moment. After a while, he said, “Aveline, you don’t 

always have to be so quick to reject kindness. It’s good to leave yourself some room to maneuver.” 

Aveline felt a bittersweet pang she couldn’t quite place. She smiled softly. “I understand, Russ.” 

Russell continued, “If you want to go out, feel free to visit my bar. You can drink, as much as you like there.” 

Aveline replied, “Sure, I’ll bring Selena along and drink up all your stock!” 

Russell laughed. “I’d welcome it.” 

After a bit more small talk, they ended the call. 

Aveline sat on the couch, staring at the intricate ceiling, suddenly feeling the urge for a drink. Unfortunately, Selena was too busy at the moment. 

She walked over to the fridge and was stunned when she opened it. It was packed with fresh ingredients, all her favorites. She tightened her grip on the fridge door for a moment. 

After a while, she took out some ingredients and headed to the kitchen to cook. It had been a long time since she had cooked for herself, and she missed eating her own food. 

She worked quickly, and in less than an hour, she had prepared two dishes and a soup. 

After removing her apron and sitting down to eat, the doorbell suddenly rang.

Aveline paused. Who would come at this hour? Only a few people knew her address. 

Curious, she got up and looked through the peephole, then froze. 

She opened the door and asked, “What are you doing here?” 

Lucas stood there, a cigarette between his fingers, his handsome and stern face looking calm and distant. His eyes glanced at her as he asked, “What? Now that we’re divorced, I can’t come to see you?” 

Aveline didn’t move to let him in. “It’s better if you don’t.” 

Lucas took a drag from his cigarette, his cheeks hollowing slightly as he 

frowned. Then he extinguished the cigarette and tossed it into the trash. “Did . you cook?” 

Aveline replied, “No.” 

Lucas said, “You’re lying. I can smell the food.” 

Aveline gave him a sarcastic smile. “You’ve got a keen nose.” 

Lucas started to move forward, intending to come in. 

Aveline blocked him again. “It’s not convenient.” 

Lucas looked down at her. “Got a man hidden inside? Is that why it’s inconvenient?”
