I shook my head violently. “No! You’re not lost! I can—”
“You can’t save everyone,” Wendy cut me off, her voice strong, though her body was weak. “You need to let me go, Ella. You need to focus on what really matters.”
Her words twisted the knife deeper into my chest. Wendy, always selfless, always brave, was willing to give herself up to save the others. But how could I stand here and let her burn? How could I walk away?
“I love you, Ella,” she whispered, her voice carrying through the flames. “Go. Please.”
My heart shattered into a thousand pieces, but deep down, I knew she was right. If I stayed, if I tried to save her now, the witch would win. More lives would be lost.
As much as I wanted to obey Wendy's wishes, I couldn’t just walk away. I couldn’t abandon her, not when I had the power to make a difference. My heart pounded as I made my decision, and before either Nathan or Tristan could stop me, I charged through the flames.
“Ella!” Nathan’s voice shouted after me, panic flooding his tone.
The heat scorched my skin, the fire clawing at me as I pushed forward, but I didn’t stop. My enchanted gear, designed to resist elemental magic, helped deflect the worst of the flames, though I could still feel the burning against my skin. My white wolf powers surged within me, a steady pulse of determination that drove me forward. I reached Wendy, her eyes widening in disbelief as I grabbed her wrists and began tearing through the ropes that held her.
"Hang on!" I gritted my teeth, ignoring the sharp pain in my hands as the flames threatened to engulf us both.
“You— you shouldn’t have—” Wendy stammered, but her voice broke off in a choked sob.
“I’m not losing you,” I said firmly, my voice steady despite the chaos surrounding us.
With a final pull, the ropes snapped, and Wendy collapsed into my arms. I held her tight, lifting her from the cross and dragging her away from the flames. The smoke burned my throat, and I felt the fire searing my legs, but I pushed through it, focused on getting her out of there.
Once we were clear, I collapsed on the ground, breathing heavily. Nathan and Tristan were beside me in seconds, helping me up as I concentrated, placing my hand on Wendy’s chest. My magic surged again, and I could feel the remnants of the witch's poison—the wolfbane—clinging to her, like a parasite. I closed my eyes, pouring every bit of energy I had left into purifying her.
