Chapter 240: A Heart Shattered

Chapter 240: A Heart Shattered

(Celeste’s POV)

Five days. Five days of relentless travel with barely any rest. My body ached from the constant movement, but I couldn’t stop. Not when Matthew needed me.

The morning sun beat down mercilessly as I approached the returning wolf warriors. I’d pushed my motorcycle beyond its limits, driven by the news that Alexander had led a rescue

mission for Matthew. Hope and fear warred within my chest as I finally spotted the procession

in the distance.

But something wasn’t right.

An icy chill crawled up my spine, stopping me in my tracks. The warriors moved with a

solemn slowness that spoke of defeat, not victory. Their postures were slumped, heads

bowed.

No,I whispered, my silverscarred wolf whimpering inside me.

I waited, scanning the ranks for Matthew’s familiar silhouette. He would spot me. He would break formation and rush to my side, his silvergray eyes lighting up.

But no one broke rank.

The procession halted some distance away. Alexander stood at the front, bathed in sunlight

that highlighted the dark, rusty stains covering his clothing. Blood. So much blood.

I barely recognized him. The powerful, icecold Alexander who never showed weakness now lookeddefeated. His shoulders sagged, his pristine white wolf aura dimmed to a pale shadow of its former glory.

Had they lost? Was Matthew injured too, hidden among the bloodied ranks?

I urged my motorcycle forward, drawing closer to the procession. My violet eyes darted frantically from face to face, searching for the one person who mattered.

Matthew?I called, my voice breaking slightly.

No response.

I drove past Alexander without a second glance, focused only on finding Matthew.

Row after row of wounded warriors, but no Matthew.

My heart pounded harder with each passing moment, dread pooling in my stomach like liquid silver.

Then, at the very rear, I saw him.

Matthew was being carried by two beta wolves, his body slumped between them, covered in dried blood. His normally vibrant face was ashen gray.

The way they carried him

My hands trembled on the motorcycle’s handlebars. Only the dead were transported that way.

No, no, no,I repeated, like a broken prayer. It couldn’t be him.

I abandoned my motorcycle, letting it crash to the ground as I stumbled forward. A morbid fascination drew my gaze back to the body.

This time, I couldn’t deny the truth. It was Matthew, with his silvergray hair matted with blood. The man who had sworn his love and protection to me now lay lifeless.

My legs gave way beneath me. I fell to my knees in the dirt, tears welling in my eyes.

Let me through,I demanded, crawling toward him. Let me see him.

The beta wolves exchanged uncertain glances but stepped aside.

With trembling fingers, I reached out to touch Matthew’s cheek. It was cold. Too cold.

Matthew,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

No response.

Matthew,I tried again, louder this time. It’s me. I’ve come to find you.

His eyelids remained closed, his chest still.

Panic seized me. I shook his shoulder, gently at first, then more frantically.

Matthew, wake up! Don’t scare me like this!

My voice echoed across the silent ranks of warriors. No one spoke. No one moved.

Please,” I begged, my voice breaking. Please wake up.

But Matthew didn’t wake.

Suddenly, strong arms pulled me back. I struggled, desperate to return to Matthew’s side.

He’s dead!a voice said firmly in my ear.

I fought against the restraint, my wolf howling inside me. No! He can’t be!

He’s dead!the voice repeated, harsher now. Matthew is dead!

The words struck me like a physical blow. I went limp, watching as the warriors steadied

Matthew’s body, adjusting his position with practiced movements.

He remained utterly still. Not a twitch. Not a breath.

The reality crashed over me in waves. Matthew was gone. Just like my grandmother. Everyone I loved was leaving me alone in this world.

Tears streamed down my face as I stared at his closed eyes, willing them to open. Praying for

a miracle.

Then, something caught my attention. A scent. Familiar. Almost imperceptible.

I turned slowly to see Alexander standing behind me, his iceblue eyes unreadable.

The scent was coming from him.

My nostrils flared as I identified it. The moonblessed sachet I had made for Matthew. The one

filled with my specially blended herbs that I’d given him as a token of my affection.

Give it back,I whispered, my grief morphing into frantic energy.

Alexander didn’t move.

GIVE IT BACK!I screamed, lunging at him. My hands tore at his clothing, searching desperately. It belongs to Matthew! Give it back!

I was beyond reason, beyond care. I ripped at Alexander’s jacket, oblivious to the winces of

pain that crossed his face as my fingers reopened wounds on his chest.

This man who once meant so much to me, whose injuries would have once brought me to

tears, now meant nothing compared to my need to reclaim that sachet.

Alexander didn’t fight back. He stood there, enduring my assault, his iceblue eyes filled with something I couldn’t recognize through my tears.

Blood seeped through his shirt where my nails had caught his flesh, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t

stop. That sachet was all I had left of Matthew.

Celeste,” Alexander said softly. “Celeste, stop.

I ignored him, continuing to tear at his clothing.

I’m sorry,” he murmured.

The last thing I saw was his hand rising, and then darkness claimed me.

(Alexander’s POV)

The dim light of the oil lamp cast long shadows across the administrative building’s sparse room. I sat at the desk, turning the bloodstained sachet over and over in

my hands.

The dried blood had turned the oncevibrant fabric a dull brown. Matthew’s blood. My friend’s blood.

I had never seen Celeste so distraught. Not even when she was dragged away to Moon Shadow Prison. Not even when Marcus Blackwood tortured her with silver chains.
