After putting Gregory to sleep, Tessa went back to the room to read.
However, when it was nearly midnight, Nicholas still didn't enter the bedroom, so she couldn't help going to the study to check on him.
"Can I come in, Nicholas?"
She knocked on the door.
Soon, the man's pleasant baritone voice sounded. "Sure."
After entering the room, Tessa noticed the stack of documents in front of him and suddenly felt bad.
"Do you still have a lot to do?"
"Yeah. What's the matter?"
Nicholas glanced at her and hinted at her to come over with his eyes.
Tessa took the hint and noticed that the stack of papers wasn't documents but account books. "Are you doing an audit?"
"It's almost the end of the year, so the restless shareholders from abroad are coming back soon. Some of these account books belong to them," he explained briefly.
Even so, Tessa knew how troublesome this matter was.
She felt sorry looking at the stack of account books that were still untouched.
"Sorry for not being of help."
While saying that, she felt a little discouraged.
Nicholas didn't seem to mind but pecked her pink lips instead. "It's okay."
"I don't need you to help me. I just want you to take good care of yourself."
He glanced at the woman in his embrace with doting eyes.
The two snuggled for a while before he let go of Tessa. "Go to bed. Don't stay up for me."
"Don't work too late." Tessa nodded and reminded him, after which he nodded in response.
Even so, he had no choice but to work until after midnight.
In the room, Tessa took her phone and glanced at the time. Her eyes were filled with helplessness and distress.
She knew that he would forget about the time whenever he got too busy.
At that thought, she went downstairs and into the kitchen.
After she left the study earlier, she told the maid to warm some milk.
Then, she carried a cup of warm milk and stood in front of the study.
When Nicholas saw her coming in, he frowned and asked in a voice laced with concern, "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"How can I sleep when you're not asleep yet?"
While saying that, she placed the milk on his desk.
While urging him to drink the milk, she uttered, "Gordon made a fuss again tonight, so I coaxed him to sleep and noticed you're still here, so I came over."
Nicholas nodded and finished the milk.
When Tessa noticed the evident weariness under his eyes, she couldn't help feeling bad for him.
"That's enough for tonight. Why don't you continue the remaining work tomorrow?"
Even though it was a negotiation, Tessa made it sound like a demand.
Nicholas smiled and pulled her into his embrace. "Okay. I'll listen to you and go to bed now."
After saying that, he intended to leave with her.
However, Tessa pushed him a little and said, "You should sleep in the guest room tonight. Gordon wakes up frequently at night and might disturb your sleep."
Even though she was suggesting that for his sake, Nicholas couldn't help but sigh. "Are we going to sleep in separate rooms now?"
Tessa broke out into laughter and glanced at him.
"Excuse me, I'm just trying to let you rest well for one night. Only then can you have the energy to work tomorrow."
"But that doesn't deny the fact that you and I are sleeping in separate rooms."
Nicholas was very concerned about this matter, but Tessa found his response amusing. She couldn't refute him for a moment.
His pleasant baritone voice sounded again. "I knew I should've sent Gordon to Mom's place, and Gregory too, so that Gordon doesn't feel lonely."
"Hey, that's enough. I was just trying to help you sleep better, yet you're taking the chance to send the two children away."
Tessa purposely glared at him and pretended like she was angry. Little did she know how charming she looked to him.
He felt his heart tingle at her stare.
Tightening his grip on her hand, he uttered in a raspy voice, "They're the ones who always ruin my moments."
"What kind of dad are you? Are you sure they're your children?"
