Chapter 42 Bittersweet moments 

That was all that I could say, hoping that he would delay my punishment. I just felt like my sensitive soul couldn’t take any more torture today. He stood up and came to me. He sat down, not keeping his distance from me at all. His perfume hit my nose again, and it reminded me of earlier, when he kept me in his arms in the car. I thought the time spent here and all the happening took my common sense completely 

“Alice, who really needs to apologise, is me.” 

Hearing him, I raised my head with a sudden move, and I looked at him astonished, I couldn’t believe my ears. The last thing that I expected him to say was that. It made me frown. He looked at the ground while I stared at him, and he continued: 

“Riccardo D’angell is the leader of the Italian mafia. His wife had a car accident, and the car that crashed into hers was the same make and type as mine. They suspected I had caused the accident intentionally. Signore D’angeli loves his young wife very much, and he wants revenge. Even if I told him many times, I wasn’t even close to the area where it happened, he still blaming me. Usually our kind, in this situation, takes revenge. He thinks I wanted to kill his wife, so he wants to take someone who is important to me.” 

He took a deep breath while he looked at me. 

“Gemma always showed up by my side, and even if I never was in love with her, I thought she didn’t deserve to be hurt because of my business, so I tried to find a solution. My dad had this idea of replacing her, to avoid her getting hurt. And this is the reason you are here.” 

I couldn’t say anything for a few moments, but I didn’t want him to think I was that stupid. Knowing I was right made me terrified more. 

“I knew that.” 

He looked at me with a sudden move, and I could feel some kind of guilt in his eyes. 

I nodded. 

“I heard about these things. My stepfather used to do dodgy businesses. I mean, I didn’t know what you needed me exactly for.” I laughed nervously while my tears appeared again. 

“Eventually, who is buying a wife nowadays on this continent?” I turned my head away, but in a minute I felt surprised to feel his hand caressing my head. He pulled me closer into his embrace. It took time while 1 calmed down again. When I felt I could speak, I moved myself away, even if I really didn’t want to, and looked at him. One question was on my mind, which I was scared to ask, but my curiosity was stronger than my fear. 

“And what are you going to do with me now?” 

He took a deep breath, then exhaled. 

*I know I was a fool. I thought at the beginning it would be easy, but it wasn’t. As I got to know you, I realised how horrible a person I was. I just couldn’t do that to you, Alice. I can’t let them harm you because of my stupidity,” 

He smiled sadly. 

“I can’t turn back time. We have to go through this situation as not me and not my family have the power to stop it at this stage, but I want you to get out of it safely. They are after you, but we are going to defend you 

He took a deep breath again, and he smiled again, but that wasn’t a cheerful smile.

He stayed motionless for a few seconds, then he reached out for the bottle and first he showed it to me, asking me if I wanted another shot. After what I heard, I didn’t mind. I nodded. 

He poured another two single shots, and we drank them at the same time.

“I am, but I don’t think I could sleep now.”

“Do you want to watch a movie?” 

I was thinking for a second, and I nodded. I stood up, but after a step I felt the effect of the alcohol, and I nearly fell. He caught me, and he looked at me, and frowned. 

“Are you okay?” 

“Yes, I think it’s just the alcohol. 

“Alice, have you eaten anything today?” 

I shook my head. He folded his arm around my waist with a sigh and he helped me to sit down, then he took his phone. 

“I order something. It will be here soon.”
