However, the frustration Mia had felt at the law firm gradually faded because of Hunter’s actions. 

Sometimes, she thought she was actually easy to please. All she needed was a little sincerity from him. But sadly, Hunter didn’t even have a heart to offer her, let alone genuine affection. 

Seeing her so quiet, Hunter occasionally glanced her way. Each time he caught sight of her calm, delicate face reflected in the window, an inexplicable sense of peace settled over him. 

He knew he didn’t love Mia, but he enjoyed the tranquil feeling she brought when they were together. They had only been married three years, yet it felt as if they had been a pair for decades. 

Understanding her urgency, Hunter drove quickly and soon arrived at the hospital entrance. As soon as he stopped the car, Mia thanked him hastily, opened the door, and jumped out. 

After parking, Hunter went up to find her. Stepping out of the elevator, he immediately spotted her slender figure standing at the emergency room entrance. Her hands clasped together, praying with a look of pure devotion. 

For reasons he couldn’t explain, a slight ache tightened his chest. Was this how she had prayed outside the door every time? 

He took a deep breath and turned toward the end of the hallway, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it. The heaviness in his chest finally started to ease as he smoked. 

Time passed, second by second, and before he knew it, he had gone through an entire pack. He opened a window to let the smoke drift away, clearing the scent from his clothes. Only then did he head back toward Mia. 

Standing behind her, he reached out and gently wrapped his arm around her waist. 

Mia reacted instinctively, grabbing his wrist and preparing to throw him over her shoulder. 

“Mia, it’s me!” 

Hearing his voice, she paused, then looked up at his strikingly handsome face, feeling a bit dazed. 

“You didn’t leave?” 

“I’m here to wait with you for your grandmother. Don’t worry, she’ll be alright,” he comforted her softly. Mia was momentarily stunned. 

In their three years of marriage, this was the first time Hunter had stayed by her side, offering comfort. Maybe he wasn’t as heartless as she had thought. 

Just then, the doors to the emergency room opened, and a hospital bed was pushed out. Her grandmother lay on it, tubes attached everywhere, her body frail and skeletal. At the sight of her, Mia’s emotions broke loose, and tears streamed down her face. 

Watching her cry so heartbreakingly, Hunter felt an unsettling pang in his chest. Frowning, he gently pulled her into his arms and murmured, “Don’t cry. Let’s ask the doctor about your grandmother’s condition first.” Mia sniffled and nodded.
