He couldn’t just blurt out his feelings to Mom. She’d never go for it.
With eyes clear and earnest, Ian crafted a fib. “This summer camp really took it out of me.”
Violette’s heart ached as she agreed, “Honey, if you’re ever overwhelmed with school work or stressed out, you tell me, okay? Education is important, but your health comes first.”
Ian nodded in agreement.
In Country A.
At the Bourne residence, 8 PM.
Brandon poured a glass of wine for Elijah but was met with a refusal.
“No more,” Elijah admitted. His cheeks flushed with a rosy glow, and there was a tipsy sparkle in his eyes.
He was meeting Violette tomorrow. Overindulging tonight would ruin his composure.
“Fine, I’ll drink it myself,” Brandon said, lifting his own glass and taking a hearty sip.
“Easy on that,” Elijah cautioned with a glance. “I know you mean well, but...”
“But what? You can’t bring yourself to hurt Violette, right? Because of your kid, you can’t be harsh.” Brandon set down his glass. “I just want to remind you. The more you sink into this, the higher the cost. If you don’t pull out now, you might never get another chance.”
The drunken haze in Elijah’s eyes dissipated instantly.
Falling in love was not easy for him, and letting go was even harder.
That was his fatal flaw, and his fatal strength.
“Elijah, as your buddy, I’ve always wanted you to be happy. I wouldn’t care if you spent a fortune on a woman. But Violette has hurt you time and again. This latest stunt is beyond the pale, and it’s the result of you letting her get away with everything.”
Elijah’s cold gaze dropped as he lit a cigarette.
“If she can prove tomorrow that she’s not the woman in that video, I’ll apologize. Any way she wants. But if she can’t, I’ll have to assume all her excuses are just lies.” Brandon’s words cut through the smoky air. His face was half-hidden in the haze.
