Chapter 303 It’s Over

The apartment was filled with a faint, musty smell. Sadie put her suitcase down, took a deep breath, and tried to swallow

the bitterness that welled up inside her.

Thankfully, Averi’s attention was instantly drawn to the cartoon show playing on the TV.

Sadie took a moment to call Carol, the nanny who had previously taken care of Averi. She gave Carol a brief rundown of

her situation, and Carol readily agreed to come over as soon as possible.

Sadie glanced at Averi, who was now immersed in the TV show, and began to tidy up the apartment.

She dusted the furniture and unpacked her suitcase, methodically sorting out her belongings as she went. Her movements

were mechanical, her mind numb.

Sadie was wiping the table when she remembered Nigel’s invitation. She picked up her phone with the intent of calling him.

She was beaten to it, however, as her phone rang with the Wall Manor’s landline number flashing on the screen.

“Hello?” Sadie answered the call.

“Hello, Mrs. Wall. This is Gabriel.” The butler addressed her respectfully, just like usual. “Mr. Nigel Wall has an urgent

matter to take care of, and needs to travel abroad. I’m afraid today’s meeting has to be canceled.”

Sadie’s fingers tightened slightly around the phone. “I understand,” she said, striving to keep her voice calm. “Do you know

when he will return?”

“That is uncertain at the moment.I will contact you once he’s back in the country,” Gabriel replied.

“Alright, thank you.” Sadie hung up the phone and slumped against the wall.

“What’s wrong, Mommy?” Averi called out in concern, having noticed his mother acting strangely.

“It’s nothing, sweetheart.” Sadie heaved a long sigh and forced herself to perk up. “Mom’s about to make dinner. What

would you like to eat?”

The boy’s eyes twinkled with excitement. “I want glazed chicken!”

“All right, then. Mom will make it for you.” Sadie ruffled his hair before turning toward the kitchen.

Sadie’s mind continued to wander as she prepared dinner. Her musings were only interrupted when a knock came at the

door.

“Carol is here.” Sadie wiped her hands and went to let the nanny in.

She was relieved to see Carol’s familiar face on the other side of the door.

“I’m here, Miss Hudson!” Carol greeted cheerfully, but then, her brows furrowed with worry. “Are you all right? You look

pale.”

Sadie mustered a smile. “I’m fine, just tired. Averi is watching TV. Please look after him for a while. I need to be

“Go and do your business. I’ll take care of the little champ,” Carol said with a smile as she walked into the apartment.

Sadie returned to the kitchen and packed some of the chicken and salad into a thermal food container.

She was greeted by the chilly autumn breeze as soon as she stepped out of the apartment. She shivered in her coat.

She hailed a cab and gave the driver the hospital’s address.

Throughout the ride, Sadie’s mind remained a jumbled mess.

She didn’t even notice when they arrived at the hospital, and the driver had to call out to her before she passed the fare and got out of the car.

Sadie entered the hospital and headed straight for Laura’s ward.

She found the old lady sitting up in bed while staring blankly out the window.

“Grandma,” Sadie said softly as she approached the bed.

Laura slowly turned her head, her eyes lighting up when she saw who her visitor was. “You’re here, Sadie,” she said in a weak and quiet voice.

“Yes, and I brought you some food.” Sadie opened the thermal food container and placed the food on the bedside table.

“Oh, vegetable salad and glazed chicken!” Laura beamed when she saw her favorite dishes. “You always know what I like.”
