Chapter 32
Chapter 32
I swallowed the fump in my throat again. Pushing away the guilt naging at me like an itchy bug bite, I crossed the room. When I reached Mom’s side, I sat in the chair beside her bed and teak her hand in my own.
“How are you feeling, Mom?” Grey asked the exact words I was about to ask. I was surprised to realize he was already behind me since I hadn’t heard his footsteps on the floor. He moved across the room like a ghost.
“Fm feeling better now. Just sleepy from my medication, though, she replied without opening her eyes. “Did you edmne here straight from your office?” Mom asked, forcing her eyes open so she could see Grey’s face.
“No, Mom, I stopped by the house first to see you, but when I got there, Lily told me you were in the hospital, so I tagged along to check how you were doing” Grey sucked in a deep breath, Worry was written all over his face as he added, “You got all of us dried. Especially Lily. She looked ready to pass
out when she saw you in bed”
Despite the gravity of the situation, Mom chuckled softly. “Ican imagine her repction as exactly that,” she replied, her pale lips curving into an amused smile afterwards.
“I was so worried about you, Mom. You can’t blame me,” I told her, trying not to sound like awhiny child.
“I know, honey. I’m just trying to make you feel better. Grey and were just trying to tease you? she replied.
Mom yawned, and her eyelids fluttered closed.
The meds she was taking were making her sleepy and weak all the time, I thought to myself up 1 bit my lower lip in pity.
“You need to sleep now, Mom. You will recover faster if you do, I will watch over you Gently, cafessed her head with my palms.
Mom didn’t reply, I realized she was already fast asleep.
Quietly, I watched the rise and fall of her chest.
“I’m going home,” Grey told me. He was already moying to the door, “‘ll come back in the evening, just need to change my clothes.” He tagged on without looking back.
Indeed, he badly needed to change clothes, I thought to myself, noticing that he didn’t lo at the hospital with his formal suit and tie. He looked as though he was going to attend a grandiose party in those clothes
“Okay,” I replied, unable to say anything more.
Without another word, Grey briskly moved to the door. Then he was gone. I was left inside the room with nothing to do except listen to the beeping monitor and the humming air–conditioning unit
After two uneventful hours, Mom woke up again. “I can’t breathe,” she complained. It was almost three, but Celine hadn’t returned yet, and I didn’t know what to do.
Ijolted out of my seat, the chair almost turning upside down froin the force of my movement.
“I’ll ring the nurse.” I pressed the buzzer, which was connected to the nurse’s station. Almost a minuto later, a nurse rushed inside.
I saw the nurse’s face turn pale after she checked Mom’s pulse and glanced at the monitor with a worried look on her expression.
“I’ll call the doctor,” the nurse said, rushing back to the door.
The doctor arrived, and the last thing I knew/I was pushed out of the room I waited outside the door, paralyzed with fear and panic.
I wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t copie. The short minutes felt like an eternity, I didn’t know how long I’d been standing there, but just when I thought I would die from tension, the door opened, and the doctor finally came out.

The grave expression on the doctor’s face made me hold my breath. Tension and park coiled inside me, making it difficult to think properly as I waited for him to speak. I forced my lips to open, but no words emerged. I was terrified to ask about Mom, knowing I wasn’t ready to face the truth,
I would die of heartbreak if the doctor confirmed what had been dreading to hear.
“Will you please sit down?” the doctor said softly, jolting the out of my thoughts.
His ominous words intensified the dread swirling inside me like a storms. Feeling my legs would give out if I didn’t sit down, I swiftly followed his lead and sat on the nearest waiting bench.
I placed my fingers on my lap. Beneath the thick fabric of my jumpsuit, I could still fool my icy fingers. Slowly, I tore my gaze away from my lap and lifted my eyes back to the doctor’s face. He didn’t sit down, just as Thad. As though he read my thoughts, he said, “You will need the chair more than I do once you hear the news.”
“What news?” I gasped. The words barely emerged from my lips.
“Your mother is doing fine,” the doctor replied, and relief flooded through me. However, whatever relief I fell vanished as quickly as it had arrived when
he added. “For now.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and turned my fats into tight balls on my lap as I fought back the urge to burst into tears. But try as I might, I couldn’t hold them back any longer, and tears spilled down my cheeks.
“Your mother isn’t going to last long” he told me regretfully. A shadow of sadness crossed his tired eyes.
