Chapter 60
“I’m pregnant!”

The news dropped in front of me like a bomb. My lips parted wide open, but no words emerged from my mouth. For once, my brain stopped functioning, and I didn’t know what to do. A number of emotions swelled inside me, and I felt as though I was about to burst
into tears.
Happiness, disbelief, worry, and sadness swirled inside me all at once. Happiness because I would finally have another child after waiting for years. Disbelief because I still couldn’t believe the heavens had finally listened to my pleas and granted my prayers. Worry because my OB–GYN once warned me that if I ever got pregnant again, it would be delicate. Lastly, sadness because the child in my womb would never have the chance to know his or her father.
But despite the number of emotions swelling in my chest, one ruled above the others: the feeling of blissful contentment at the knowledge that a life was growing inside me.
My hand, as if it had a mind of its own, felt my still–flat stomach. Tears stung my eyes as I caressed my womb. Though I had lost the people I loved the most, God had given me the gift of life in the form of the child in my womb.
“Is the baby really alright?” I looked up at Cassandra and asked. I was worried because I had lost track of what happened before I lost consciousness, but I was sure I had nearly collapsed on the floor.
“Don’t worry, Lily. I assure you the baby is fine. As Sophia told me, you didn’t fall on the
floor. Leilani, your grandmother, and Sophia caught you by the arm when you passed out.
Then one of your brothers lifted you up and carried you outside the hotel where an ambulance was waiting,” Cassandra explained in detail. After listening to her, I let out a sigh of relief.
Thank God! My baby is fine, I thought to myself.

Cassandra told me that the whole family stayed the night with me. “They were so worried about you and refused to leave your side,” she explained. “Could you believe it? Sophia and Leilani slept on the sofa! Your father stayed up until morning, and so did your six brothers! However, because of work, the men left the room early while your mother and grandmother stayed with you for an hour until they decided to briefly return home to change their clothes,” she added with a fond smile on her lips.
“I wish I had a family like them,” Cassandra sighed.
It was now my turn to squeeze her hand. “You’re a part of my family too,” I told her. “You saved my life, and I’ll be forever indebted to you,” I whispered, returning the smile on her face.
“Just forget about that, Lily.”
“I won’t,” I replied. “If it weren’t for you, I would have lost my baby too.”
Cassandra waved her hand in dismissal. “Let’s not talk about that now. You have to eat breakfast first. You haven’t eaten anything since last night because you were asleep.”
At the mention of food, the growling in my stomach became more obvious. Indeed, I was so hungry that I could eat a horse.
Cassandra let go of my hand and rose from her seat. “I’ll tell the hospital staff to deliver your breakfast now,” she said, striding to the door and gently closing it behind her.
The room was quiet except for the hum of the air–conditioning unit, so I decided to turn on
the television to make the silence in the room less noticeable. I found the remote on the
table beside the bed, which was within my reach. When it was in my hand, I pressed the
power button.
As though fate were playing a joke on me, the first thing I saw when the television turned on was the face of Greyson Gabriel Bradford and Natalia Romani.
I swallowed the huge lump in my throat as the screen showed a recap of the lavish church
wedding of the couple.

My heart felt as though it was being ripped in two. Despite trying to force myself to look away, my will wasn’t enough to stop me from watching the wedding scene, which I knew would only cause my heart more pain.
“My love, I give you this ring as a sign of my eternal love,” Grey began as he slowly slid the ring onto his bride’s finger. “Wear it with love and joy. I choose you to be my wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward. I will be there for you in your times of need, just as I know I can turn to you when I need a guiding hand. I love you more fiercely with every second that slips through our hands.”
The stabbing pain in my heart intensified. I wanted to turn the television off, but my strength felt drained, and my hands refused to move. Natalia finished her vow, but I was still frozen in my place, watching as Grey lifted the veil covering Natalia’s face. Without a moment’s delay, he claimed her lips.
The moment their lips touched, my heart dropped and shattered into a thousand pieces on
the floor.
Tears fell down my cheeks. Watching the man I loved marry someone else was more painful than I had thought. My silent cries escalated into a sob that shook my frail
shoulders.
At that exact moment, the door flung open, and Cassandra entered the room. Her gaze immediately dropped on me, then on the television. Quickly recovering from the shock, she
skittered across the room. Grabbing the remote, she immediately turned the television off.
