The day after I was discharged from the hospital, the doctor signed my discharge papers since my medical results were all normal. My baby was in good health, and so was I. My mind was at ease leaving the hospital since there was nothing I had to worry about.

Though the Phoenix family had stayed with me the whole time, I still hadn’t been able to talk to them privately about what they were planning to do with me. They hadn’t brought up the topic either, but I knew they would when the right time came. Perhaps the right time would happen after we got home. And speaking of home, Sophia and Philip insisted that I now stay with them.

Until now, I still didn’t believe Sophia to be my mother and Philip to be my father. Things had happened so suddenly and without warning. I’m still wondering if it’s just a dream.

What if they made a mistake? What if I’m not really their missing daughter and they just jumped to conclusions because I looked like Leilani? I couldn’t shake those questions from my mind because I knew there was a possibility they mistook me for Lilibeth.

It was hard to believe that they could be my family. I always believed the woman who raised me was my mother. She was so good to me and showed me nothing but love. However, after learning the story behind how I was stolen from my family, it made it difficult for me to

accept the truth because it meant my mom lied to me.

It’s like knowing that the life I thought was really mine had been a huge lie all along.

“Lily? What are you thinking? You seem so far away,” Cassandra told me as she entered the

room and found me spacing out on the bed.

“I was wondering what if the DNA result comes back negative,” I told her quietly.

“There’s no way it will be negative,” she replied without the slightest doubt in her voice. “I would bet my whole life that you are their daughter!” she added with conviction in her

tone.

“Why?” The question slipped out smoothly from my lips.

I was unable to speak for a while with what Cassandra told me. Maybe I was denying the obvious truth because I was afraid to accept that the woman who raised me had just stolen me as a replacement for her dead child.

“Wait until you see the DNA results, and you will see I’m right,” she said, smiling widely.

“In fact, I have the DNA results with me,” she added, pulling out a hidden envelope from

behind her.

My eyes widened in shock, and my jaw dropped.

“H–have you read what’s inside?” I asked her, unable to conceal the tremble in my tone. My pulse jittered, and my heartbeat raced as I waited for her to answer.

“No,” she calmly whispered, handing me the envelope that contained the DNA results.

“You must be the one to open it,” she told me.

I took the envelope in my trembling fingers. Whether the result was positive or not, my life would never be the same again.

I took a deep breath. Summoning all the courage I could muster, I opened the sealed envelope and took out the paper inside to read what it contained.

Pulling away from me, Cassandra handed me a handkerchief. I took it from her hand and

wiped the tears from my cheeks.

“I’m such a crybaby,” I told her, chuckling lightly at how emotional I’ve been these past few days.

“It’s natural, Lily, because you’re pregnant. Pregnant women tend to be emotional at

times,” she assured me before adding, “The chauffeur will be here soon, so dry your tears and smile. The whole Phoenix family is waiting for you at home. I don’t want your family to think I’m making you cry.”
