Won’t he stop bothering me? I thought to myself, exasperated. He’s up to something again, but whatever that is, I won’t allow it to happen. Ignoring his persistent calls, I clambered down from the car and winced at the excruciating pain in my ankles. I almost forgot about my injury, I mused to myself, followed by a groan. Luis came to me and lifted me up from the car seat, then made a beeline straight to my room, where he told me my daughter Isabelle was waiting.
My brother carried me with ease as though I weighed no more than a feather until we reached my bedroom. I discovered Leilani and a servant were inside when I entered the room; the servant left to give us privacy. Closing the door, Luis carefully lowered me onto the bed.
“I’m glad you’re fine–aside, of course, from the sprain on your ankle,” Leilani spoke. Her keen eyes surveyed me from head to toe. Worry didn’t evidently show on her face, but I could hear it in her voice. “I had a mini heart attack after hearing your mom’s frantic voice telling Philip you’d been run down by a car! Thank God you only have a minor injury,” Leilani added, shaking her head.
My lips opened but then closed again. Guilt swelled inside me as I realized how I made
everyone worry. But even though I tried to steer clear of trouble, it was trouble that kept looking for me. I lowered my head to my lap, maintaining my silence, knowing I couldn’t say anything that would make anyone feel better.
“I’m not mad at you, Lily,” Leilani assured me in the softest voice she could muster. She laid a gentle palm on my shoulders. “We are not mad at you but mad at what’s happening around you. We lost you once, and it took us twenty–four long years to find you. We couldn’t afford to lose you again and wait another lifetime to be with you. We don’t want anything to ever happen to you again.”
“I’m sorry, Grandmother,” I finally spoke.
“It wasn’t your fault, so don’t say you’re sorry, Lily.” She patted my shoulders one last

time and rose from the bedside. “I’ll leave you now so you can rest.” After saying that, Luis and my grandmother departed through the door.
When they were gone, I let out a weary sigh.
The beep of my phone captured my attention. I glanced at the screen and saw a text message from Grey.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU WENT HOME SAFELY…
I didn’t reply and immediately pressed the delete button.
I was still clearing his text messages when I received another message from him.
DON’T FORGET TO APPLY COLD COMPRESS TO YOUR SWOLLEN ANKLES…
The message immediately went to trash again. After that message, he stopped texting me. He must have realized that I wasn’t going to reply back. He was right, I thought triumphantly as I placed my phone on top of the bedside table after I finished deleting every single text he sent me.
By the next day, I wasn’t allowed to return to the office. I seriously didn’t mind that since I
couldn’t move my swollen ankles anyway. Days swiftly passed, but even after a couple of days, my parents refused to let me return to the hotel, fearing that the same incident might happen again. I tried to assure them it wouldn’t since the culprit had been caught, but still, they wouldn’t allow me to leave the house and told me to wait until a whole week had
passed. That’s when I felt like my parents were keeping something from me.
I didn’t want them to feel bad, so I just agreed with their plans.
I had tons of papers to sign, so I let my personal secretary come to the house every time a very important document needed my signature. While I was not allowed to leave the house, the arrangement went that way.
I did my paperwork at home and sent it to my secretary for her to print out. The daily transactions went smoothly, and by God’s grace, I hadn’t experienced any difficulty while working at home.

The only thing I considered a nuisance while at home was my ex–husband’s constant text messages. He was sending messages as though we were close friends. Despite his daily efforts, I never replied to his text messages at all.
I pretended he didn’t exist at all. But that didn’t mean I did it without difficulty.
A day before I was set to return to the hotel, I received a very mysterious email. At first, I thought Grey was desperate to contact me again. He tried to find out my email, but after a thorough inspection, I realized he wasn’t the sender.
My heart suddenly raced as I clicked through the email.
