Billionaire's Pregnant Ex-wife novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

Do you think I would believe that?she said softly, looking me straight in the eye. There was a knowing look in her eyes, as though she could read past my thoughts and uncover my deepest, darkest secret. No one would believe that, Lily. Ask anyone who sees the way you look at him, and they would point out you’re lying.

I’m telling the truth,I tried to convince her, but the way I said the words wasn’t convincing at all. She wasn’t buying it.

Nah, I can tell if someone is lying right away. I haven’t told you, but I’m a psychology graduate. I studied people’s behavior and know when they are being honest or not.

I couldn’t take her gaze anymore, and my eyes dropped to the table. It was hard to look at her now that I knew she could read me like an open book.

Both of you are stubborn as hell and refuse to admit the truth,Catrina mumbled under her breath while shaking her head. If the two of you were just honest with each other, your complicated love story wouldn’t continue to drag on.She added with a resigned sigh.

Well then, let’s just see where this story goes, but I hope the two of you settle everything and find the happiness you both deserve, she told me. When I finally lifted my gaze to hers, she gave me an understanding smile that hit me straight to the heart. I was touched by the genuine concern I saw in her eyes.

Our dinner was served, and Grey returned to our table just in time for the last dish to be placed on the table.

I’m starving. Shall we eat?

We started to eat in silence. The only sounds at our table were the soft clattering of cutlery and the mellow music coming from the speakers. Now that I knew the truth about Grey’s relationship with Catrina, a heavy weight was lifted from my chest, and I was able to enjoy every single dish we ordered.

Grey briefly looked in my direction several times when he thought I wasn’t looking at him.

I could tell he was trying to read the expression on my face, wondering if I was upset or mad at him. Ignoring him, I continued to eat heartily, savoring the delicious food spread abundantly in front of me.

When we finished dinner, Catrina informed us she was going home. She had received a message from her mother that she was expected at their house tonight.

I don’t want them to wait, she said, picking up her shoulder bag.

Wouldn’t you join us for wine?Grey asked her.

Would you want me to stay further?she mischievously asked him.

No,was his brief reply.

A soft chuckle escaped her lips. Winking at him, she added, I wouldn’t want to stay

anyway.

Be careful,Grey said, ruffling her hair as she kissed him on the cheek.

I will,Catrina replied. Turning to me, she kissed me on the cheek and finally bid one last goodbye before strutting to the door.

She’s such a sweet girl, but sometimes she can be a spoiled brat,he murmured under his

breath. Fondness sprang at the corners of his eyes as he watched her walk away. When she was gone, he finally tore his gaze from the upscale door and turned to me.

What did the two of you talk about while I was gone?he asked.

The waiter returned to our table with a bottle of vintage wine and two wine glasses. He poured my glass first and then turned to fill Grey’s glass. When he finished, he carefully placed the bottle on the table, slightly bowed his head, then walked away. When he was

gone, I turned to Grey and replied, Girls talk.

A soft groan emerged from his lips. I thought so.

Grabbing my glass, I brought the contents to my lips. I savored the sweetness of the wine as

it spread down my throat.

When did you adopt your daughter, Isabelle? The sudden question startled me, and a cough erupted from my lips as I choked on my wine.

Immediately, I grabbed the table napkin and wiped my lips. Why did you suddenly ask?

I’m just curious,he replied. Taking a sip from the wine in his hand, he added nonchalantly, I was hoping she was my daughter.

Grey’s exquisite hazelgreen eyes bore into me intently, as though he was trying to read my deepest and darkest secrets. The glass almost slipped out of my trembling fingers. I immediately lowered the glass before it slipped from my hold.

Are you alright? He eyed me worriedly. You look pale. Are you not feeling well?

II’m fine,I assured him, trying to act as calm as possible despite the fact that my knees were shaking underneath the table and my fingers were icy cold.

Shrugging his shoulders, Grey repeated the question.

I cleared my throat. Ignoring the thundering in my chest, I summoned my voice. A month after she was born,I lied, crossing my cold fingers in my lap. She was left in an orphanage, and when a friend of mine who used to work there learned about my plans to

adopt a child, she referred me to the orphanage.

She’s a very adorable girl,he murmured affectionately. How I really wish I had a daughter like her.

I bit my lower lip as a sudden surge of guilt blossomed inside me. Am I bad for keeping the truth from him? I asked myself upon seeing the deep longing sparking in his hazelgreen

eyes. It made the guilt in my chest heavier.

Damn! I hate this feeling, I thought to myself.

I grabbed my glass and poured the contents straight to my lips to calm my jittery nerves. When I finally lowered the glass again, it was empty.

Grey refilled my glass again and then poured a glass of wine for himself.

Silence lapsed between us as we both finished our glasses.
